Embracing Communion at One's Local Church Involves the Cross and the Joy of Community - by Fr. Jean-Marie Kabesa Bilwala

 We are in the Archdiocese of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, specifically in the Outremont district, home to the Saint-Madeleine parish. August 30, 2026 was a very significant day. It marked the return of the parishioners from vacation and the parish patronal feast, which is usually celebrated on July 22, during the summer vacation period. The event was well-attended by many faithful congregants. 

They came together for one Mass on Sunday. The Mass took place at 10 a.m. and was presided over by Father Yoland Ouellet, a missionary oblate of Mary and the national director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in French-speaking provinces of Canada. Fathers Jean- Marie Kabesa Bilwala, the pastor and episcopal vicar of the center, and Danny Dubois, a diocesan priest of Trois-Rivières Diocese concelebrated the mass. Dany, a deacon from Venezuela studying in Rome who is on vacation in Canada, was also present. It was a magnificent celebration. 

In his homily, Father Yoland invited us to reflect on the cross, a significant symbol of our mission. Following the example of Saint Madeleine, our parish’s patron saint, we must embrace the cross. Before the final blessing, we blessed our young parishioners who are still students, as well as their school supplies. 

 Another moment that characterized our communion today was gathering around a common meal. We were outside, in the church garden, enjoying the cool air. The parishioners brought food to share. There was plenty of food for everyone, even those who could not bring something. We ate to our hearts’ content, and everyone was satisfied.

 There is joy in forming a community with a sense of communion because Christ is at the center of our community and forms a communion with his Father and the Holy Spirit. May the spirit of communion in our Saint-Madeleine of Outremont community remain with us and serve as an example in our daily lives.
