Three distinguished scholars have been named by Pope Leo XIV to the Pontifical Committee for Historical Sciences:
Prof. Umberto Longo: Director of the Italian Historical Institute for the Middle Ages in Rome, Italy.
Prof. Francesco Cesareo: President Emeritus of Assumption University in Worcester, Massachusetts, USA.
Prof. Anna Barańska: Associate Professor in the Faculty of Humanities at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin, Poland.
Over 70 Years of Historical Legacy
Founded in 1954 by Pope Pius XII, the Pontifical Committee for Historical Sciences builds on the legacy of the Cardinal Commission for Historical Studies, originally established by Pope Leo XIII through the 1883 Apostolic Letter Saepenumero considerantes.
Throughout its history, the Committee has focused on safeguarding and promoting the Church's archival heritage, frequently advocating for broader scholar access to the collections of the Holy See and the Vatican Archives.
The Committee is currently chaired by Father Marek Inglot, S.J., with Pierantonio Piatti serving as secretary.
