Pope Leo XIV, on August 22, the memorial of the Queenship of Mary, before traveling to Rimini, visited the nearby home of the Augustinian nuns. There he was welcomed with joy and music. Also, a moment of deep prayer marked the private visit of Pope Leo to the Abbey of Saint Anthony of Padua in Pennabilli, this Saturday (22/08).
After concluding the pastoral visit to the Republic of San Marino and before heading to Rimini, the Pontiff was with the Agostinian nuns, prayed with the community in the chapel, and had lunch with the religious women.
Among songs and instruments, Pope Leo XIV experienced a meeting of prayer and fraternity with the community that had already visited in 2005 and 2009, when he was the general prior of the Order of Saint Augustine.
They call them the "Sisters of the Rock" because their monastery, founded in 1517 and dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua, is located on the Pennabilli Rock. Over the centuries, it has been home to several religious families. The Augustinian nuns arrived in the village of Valmarecchia, in the hills of the province of Rimini, in the 19th century. Deprived of the monastery in 1861, when the New Kingdom of Italy decreed the suppression of religious orders and confiscated their assets, the nuns repurchased it in 1900 and during the Second World War, they opened its doors to two communities of nuns whom the Germans wanted to deport to Germany, and to the girls of the families of displaced persons from Rimini.
Their community today is a lively and youthful one, made up of eleven solemnly professed nuns, two temporary professed nuns, a novice, and a postulant. Life within the monastery is marked by prayer, work, and study, where spaces have been created for a carpentry shop and a stained-glass workshop, and the thriving Orto Amoris, a biointensive garden that produces vegetables in every season, owes its name to the famous definition of virtue that the Bishop of Hippo offers in The City of God (15, 22): "Definitio brevis et vera virtutis ordo est amoris," "A brief and true definition of virtue is the order of love."
"Once again, Brother Robert Prevost, now Pope Leo XIV, comes to visit us. He comes and encounters a community of women reaching out to God, on the path to what is the greatest gift one can receive: becoming sisters and friends. More and more," the prioress, Mother Francesca Serreli, told Vatican media, adding that the desire of the Augustinian community of Pennabilli is "to contribute to the vitality of the Kingdom of God with a life passionate about the Gospel and human growth. A life that inspires others, in a mutual, never-ending exchange."
