Wow Thousands Join Eucharistic Procession by Boat Along Louisiana’s Historic 40-mile Bayou Teche for the Annual Fête-Dieu du Teche - VIDEO

On August 15, 2026, thousands of Catholic faithful gathered along Louisiana’s historic Bayou Teche for the annual Fête-Dieu du Teche, a vibrant 40-mile Eucharistic boat procession. Organized by Fr. Michael Champagne and the Community of Jesus Crucified in the Diocese of Lafayette, the single-day pilgrimage seamlessly blends Catholic devotion with Cajun heritage.

Held on the Solemnity of Mary’s Assumption—also National Acadian Day—the procession retraced the 1765 aquatic migration route of exiled Acadian (Cajun) Catholics from Leonville to St. Martinville. This year’s event honored both the 250th anniversary of American Independence and 261 years of Catholicism in the region.

Event Highlights & Spiritual Impact

  • Sacred Flotilla: Led by boats carrying the Holy Eucharist exposed in a monstrance, a life-size crucifix, incense, and statues of Our Lady of the Assumption (patroness of the Acadians) and St. Joseph with the Infant Jesus.

  • Prayer Stops: Beginning with a French-language Mass celebrated by Bishop J. Douglas Deshotel and concluding with Vespers, the procession made six scheduled stops at churches and parks for Rosary recitations, hymns, adoration, and Confession.

  • Broad Reach: Despite record-breaking heat, crowds lined the shore, while others joined via Facebook livestream and FM radio. Participants were eligible for a 7-year renewable Plenary Indulgence granted by Pope Francis.

  • Community Witness: Local clergy and lay leaders praised the procession as a powerful display of public faith, unity, and healing, with organizers noting its history of inspiring vocations and encouraging believers to return to the sacraments.

Looking Ahead: Expansion to the Mississippi Building on this year's success, organizers are planning an ambitious expansion. To commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Diocese of St. Louis and the 300th anniversary of the Ursuline sisters' arrival in New Orleans, the next Fête-Dieu will transform into an unprecedented eight-day boat procession down the Mississippi River from St. Louis to New Orleans, scheduled for December 2–9, 2027. Next summer, the Feast of the Assumption will be marked in St. Martinville with a five-day continuous Bible reading.
