Pope Orders Major Expansion for Vatican Archives and Library
Facing a growing backlog of historical documents and religious texts, the Pope has decreed, in a new chirograph, a major expansion of both the Vatican Apostolic Archive and the Vatican Apostolic Library, authorizing the construction of a new facility within Vatican City.
Key Updates & Provisions
Location Shift: Previous plans placed the expansion across Rome at the Lateran site. Recent opportunities made it feasible to keep the extension within Vatican City proper at the Fontana dell’Autoparco site, which officials deemed far more practical.
Facility Allocation: The planned building will incorporate modern architectural and technological standards. Space will be split equally between the Archive and the Library, alongside dedicated areas for Vatican City State services.
Financial & Structural Management:
The Vatican City State Governorate will fund spaces allocated for State services.
The Archive and Library will cover costs related to relocating the current motor pool and building a replacement parking structure.
To raise and manage construction funds, both institutions will establish a dedicated Vatican instrumental foundation governed under the December 2022 Motu Proprio regulations.
Interim Storage: The Vatican Apostolic Library will maintain its current auxiliary storage space at the Pontifical Major Roman Seminary until construction finishes.
