BREAKING Pope Leo XIV Cancels Assisi Visit on Doctor's Recommendation to Recover from Lung Surgery

Pope Leo XIV will no longer attend the upcoming peace gathering in Assisi on October 27, following advice from his medical team to support his ongoing recovery from recent thoracic surgery.

The Holy See Press Office announced Friday that while the Pontiff’s postoperative healing is “progressing very well,” doctors recommended against the scheduled helicopter travel as a precaution. On October 13, Pope Leo underwent a successful procedure to remove the lower lobe of his right lung due to malignant adenocarcinoma. Medical officials confirmed earlier this week that the entire tumor was removed and no further treatments are required.

Although unable to attend in person, Pope Leo will send a message to participants, reaffirming his belief that the "Spirit of Assisi" dialogue remains a crucial tool for peace during times of global conflict.

The three-day event, titled "Unarmed and Disarming Peace," is organized by the Sant'Egidio Community from October 25 to 27. Marking the 40th anniversary of Saint John Paul II’s historic 1986 World Day of Prayer for Peace, this year's gathering will bring together 384 interreligious, cultural, and political leaders from 53 countries across 24 thematic forums.

  • Trip Cancellation: Pope Leo XIV has canceled his October 27 trip to Assisi on medical advice to avoid travel so soon after surgery.

  • Health Update: Doctors report his recovery is going exceptionally well following the October 13 surgery that removed the lower lobe of his right lung. No further treatment is needed.

  • Pope’s Message: The Pope will send a written message to event participants, expressing his continued commitment to interreligious peace dialogue.

  • About the Event: Organized by the Sant'Egidio Community, the "Unarmed and Disarming Peace" meeting (Oct 25–27) marks the 40th anniversary of St. John Paul II's 1986 peace day and will host nearly 400 global delegates.
