PLENARY INDULGENCE FOR WORLD MISSION DAY
UPDATED - On the occasion of the 100th World Mission Day, celebrated today, Sunday, October 18, 2026, the Apostolic Penitentiary—by special authority granted by Pope Leo XIV—has granted a plenary indulgence to the faithful who pray for the Holy Father's Intentions. (an Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory be)
The decree, dated October 13, 2026, stipulates that the indulgence may be obtained under the customary conditions established by the Church: sacramental confession, Eucharistic communion, and prayer for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff, accompanied by detachment from sin.
๐ The indulgence may also be applied as a suffrage for the souls of the faithful departed who are in Purgatory.
The elderly, the sick, those who care for them, and anyone unable to leave their home for serious reasons may also obtain the indulgence by joining spiritually in this Marian prayer and committing to fulfill the customary conditions as soon as possible.
The decree further encourages priests to make themselves available to hear confessions, so that the faithful may approach the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
๐ This provision was issued by the Apostolic Penitentiary on October 13, 2026.
General Conditions: To gain a plenary indulgence you need to go to confession, receive Holy Communion, and pray for the pope’s intentions all within about a twenty-day period. The final condition is that you must be free from all attachment to sin, including venial sin. If you try to receive a plenary indulgence, but are unable to meet the last condition, you still receive a partial indulgence.
