Pope Leo XIV Progressing Well Following Successful Lung Operation

Pope Leo XIV is recovering smoothly at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital following a successful, complication-free lung operation. According to the Holy See Press Office, the Pontiff had a calm first night in the hospital and is already taking active steps toward recovery.

The Holy Father continues to govern the Church remotely accepting a resignation and making 2 appointments: The Holy Father has accepted the resignation from the pastoral care of the Archdiocese of Košice, Slovakia, presented by His Excellency Monsignor Bernard Bober. The Holy Father has appointed His Excellency Monsignor Marek Forgáč as Metropolitan Archbishop of Košice (Slovakia) , transferring him from the  office of Auxiliary Bishop of Košice. The Holy Father has appointed His Excellency Monsignor Wellington de Queiroz Vieira as Metropolitan Archbishop of Cuiabá (Brazil), transferring him from the Diocese of Cristalândia.

On Wednesday morning, post-surgery scheduled blood tests and a chest X-ray were conducted. In a statement released on October 14, lead surgeon Professor Stefano Margaritora (Chief of Thoracic Surgery at Gemelli) and Dr. Luigi Carbone confirmed that the test results fell within expected parameters, signaling normal postoperative progress.

The Pope has already begun respiratory physiotherapy, resumed eating standard meals, and is walking around his room on the hospital's 10th floor. Later in the afternoon, Holy See Press Office Director Matteo Bruni shared that Pope Leo concelebrated Mass in a room prepared for him inside the facility. The Holy See Press Office notes that Pope Leo XIV’s upcoming Apostolic Journey to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru, is still scheduled to take place from 6 to 17 November.

The pope sent a special note following the Holy Mass presided by Cardinal Luis Tagle for the 10th anniversary of Amoris Laetitia: "As you know, I have not been able to be with you these past few days. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your prayers and for the work you have done together. Your sharing of experiences and your attentive listening are truly a gift for the entire Church....Entrusting each of you to the protection of the Holy Family of Nazareth, I ask you please to pray for me, as I pray for you.  To all of you I gladly impart my Apostolic Blessing."
