Pope Leo XIV Names Archbishop Viola as Archpriest of St. Peter’s Basilica
The Holy See announced major leadership appointments on Saturday, with Pope Leo XIV naming Archbishop Vittorio Francesco Viola, O.F.M., as Archpriest of the Papal Basilica of St. Peter in the Vatican.
In addition to this role, Archbishop Viola will serve as Vicar General of His Holiness for Vatican City and President of the Fabric of St. Peter.
Archbishop Viola, who previously served as Secretary of the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, brings a deep background in liturgy to his new role. Born in Biella, Italy, in 1965, he joined the Franciscan Order in 1991, was ordained a priest in 1993, and holds a doctorate in sacred liturgy from the Pontifical Liturgical Institute of Sant’Anselmo. He served as Bishop of Tortona starting in 2014 before his appointment to the Dicastery in 2021.
New Secretary for Divine Worship
To fill the vacancy at the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, Pope Leo has appointed Bishop Aurelio García Macías as its new Secretary.
Bishop García Macías has served as Undersecretary of the Dicastery since May 2021, when he was raised to the episcopate by Pope Francis. Born in Pollos, Spain, in 1965, he was ordained for the Archdiocese of Valladolid in 1992 and earned a doctorate in liturgy from Saint Anselm. A former seminary rector, he has been part of the Dicastery’s work since 2015.
