Cardinal Zuppi Urges Faster Family Reunification Efforts Following Moscow Visit
Cardinal Matteo Zuppi, the Holy See’s special envoy for humanitarian issues and President of the Italian Bishops’ Conference, has completed his third diplomatic mission to Moscow. Accompanied by Apostolic Nuncio Archbishop Giovanni d’Aniello, Cardinal Zuppi focused negotiations on the repatriation of Ukrainian children, family reunifications, missing persons, and the welfare of both civilian and military prisoners of war.
During his three-day visit, Cardinal Zuppi met with key Russian officials, including presidential foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov, Human Rights Commissioner Yana Lantratova, and Children’s Rights Commissioner Maria Lvova-Belova. Calling for streamlined administrative procedures, Cardinal Zuppi emphasized, “We need to strengthen and speed up the checks needed to ensure that families can be reunited.” His agenda also included a visit to a camp housing Ukrainian prisoners of war, where he conveyed Pope Leo XIV’s support and expressed hope for their swift return home.
