United in Faith: Millions Walk to Luján Ahead of Papal Visit
A record-breaking 2.7 million pilgrims flooded the road to the Basilica of Our Lady of Luján for the 52nd Youth Pilgrimage, creating an impressive spectacle of devotion just one month before Pope Leo XIV’s highly anticipated visit to Argentina.
“No one came alone,” declared Archbishop Jorge García Cuerva during the central mass.

“With every step, we carried our families, our friends, the neighbor facing hard times, the job-seeker, the sick, and everyone who asked us for a prayer.”
The traditional 60-kilometer trek from Buenos Aires’ Liniers neighborhood to the patron saint’s shrine began under a heavy downpour on Saturday, October 3. Unfazed by the weather, thousands walked independently or alongside parish groups like the Basilica of Saint Anthony of Padua from Devoto. Supported by a dedicated crew of parishioners and local scouts carrying supplies, water, and first-aid gear, the Devoto church brought a record 240 walkers this year—up from its usual 150.
Volunteers noted that the upcoming papal visit reinvigorated the youth. “Pope Leo brings a message of peace and hope when the world needs it most,” said volunteer Elba, 72.
As night fell, weary pilgrims completed their journey to the sounds of cheers, hugs, and hymns. Outside the illuminated Basilica, fatigue gave way to joy as crowds celebrated reaching the shrine, united by faith and community.
With Pope Leo XIV’s upcoming visit inspiring a wave of renewed hope among the youth, turnout smashed previous records. When the exhausted walkers finally reached the steps of the Basilica in Luján, tears and fatigue turned into joy, music, and triumphant shouts: “You made it! You did it!”
