During the visit, issues related to the war in Ukraine, the restoration of peace and the activities of the Churches in the country were discussed.

UPDATE: In a subsequent meeting with reporters (as quoted from AP), the PM Denys Shmyhal said, “I asked His Holiness to help us return home Ukrainians, Ukrainian children who are detained, arrested, and criminally deported to Russia.”

 

On Thursday, April 27, 2023, Pope Francis received the Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal in an audience at the Vatican, who later met with the Secretary of State of the Holy See, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who was accompanied by Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with states and international organizations.

The Holy See released that, the conversation of the Head of the Ukrainian Government with the Holy Father lasted approximately 30 minutes, after which the delegation was introduced and gifts were exchanged. Pope Francis presented a bronze cast depicting a budding flower with the inscription: "Peace is a delicate flower", as well as special editions of the Message for this year's World Day of Peace, the Document on Universal Human Fraternity, a photo album on prayer for the world affected by the pandemic, which held on March 27, 2020, and a copy of the book "Encyclical on Peace in Ukraine", which included all the statements of the Holy Father regarding the war, which were made during the first nine months after the large-scale Russian invasion. Denis Shmyhal presented a reproduction of the famous "Borodyansky cockerel", a decorative product of the Vasylkiv majolica factory, which became a symbol of the indomitability of the Ukrainian people, decorated with ears of corn from Ukraine, and a photo album about the ongoing war in Ukraine and the resistance of the Ukrainian people.

In the message of the press service of the Holy See, it is noted that during the sincere negotiations that took place in the State Secretariat, various issues related to the war in Ukraine were discussed, paying special attention to the humanitarian aspect and efforts to restore peace. In the same context, various issues related to the life and activity of Churches in the country were also discussed.
