Pope Francis with 7,500 Children is Asked by a Palestinian Girl "will peace never return?" and he Replies " We are living in an ugly war..."let's work for peace". Everyone!"

Audience with children from various parts of the world on the occasion of the “Children meet the Pope” event, 06.11.2023
This afternoon, in the Paul VI Hall, the Holy Father Francis received in audience 7,500 children from 84 countries around the world on the occasion of the event sponsored by the Dicastery for Culture and Education "Children meet the Pope" which has as its theme: Let's learn by boys and girls.
Upon his arrival in the Hall, the Pope was welcomed by the songs and greetings of 5 children, representatives of the 5 continents, coming from Syria, Ukraine, Benin, Guatemala and Australia. Then the Holy Father gave his speech and responded off the cuff to the questions posed to him by 14 children of different nationalities.
Speech by the Holy Father
Dear boys and girls, good morning and welcome everyone! Welcome!
Heartfelt thanks to all of you for coming, to your companions and to the organizers of this meeting: to Cardinal José Tolentino and the Dicastery for Culture and Education, to Father Enzo Fortunato - a good Neapolitan -, to your families and to all the people and associations who contributed – to Aldo, who worked so hard, and all those who are here. Thank you all!
The theme of our meeting is "Let's learn from boys and girls". But what can we learn from you?

Can we learn something? What do you think? Can we learn or can we not learn from you? [they respond by shouting] I don't hear... [they shout: “yes!”] It's like this! And we need to learn from you. I am always happy when I meet you, because you teach me something new every time. For example, you remind me how beautiful life is in its simplicity, and you also teach me how beautiful it is to be together! They are two great gifts from God: being together and with simplicity
And we want to say to the world, so let's say it together, now, and you repeat it with me: "Life is a gift!". All together: [repeat]. He doesn't feel well... [they repeat louder] It's like this: life is a gift, a beautiful gift and we are brothers, all of us. Are we enemies? [they reply: “No!”] I don't feel… Are we enemies? [they shout louder: “No!”] Are we brothers? [they reply: “Yes!”] Well done, well done. You answered well.
And in fact you have come here from all over the world, just like many brothers who meet in a big house. It is the big house that Jesus gave us: the Church is the home of the family, and the Lord always receives us with a hug, with a caress.
I would like to welcome all of you like this, one by one, but there are many of you, and so I tell you all together, boys and girls, that you are a wonderful thing, your age is wonderful and I tell you to move forward. And you are right in the Church.

Let's think of the children who are suffering right now - let's not forget - from climate disasters, from hunger, from war and from poverty. You know that there are bad people who do harm, who wage war, destroy... Do you want to do harm? [they reply: “No!”] Do you want to help? [they answer: “Yes!”] I like this, I like it.
Dear children, your presence here is a sign that goes straight to the hearts of all of us adults, and we, grown-up people, must look at your spontaneity and listen to your message.
You have prepared some questions: so as not to be boring with the discussion, let's hear the questions and what you have prepared for me. And thank you very much, thank you, dear children. And remember: life is a wonderful gift. Shall we say it together? Life is a wonderful gift. Once again: life is a wonderful gift. God loves us so much, and it is beautiful to be together, communicate, share and give. Always do it like this, Our Lady will help you. Please: always pray to Our Lady! Do you pray to Our Lady? [they answer: “Yes!”] Do you pray to Our Lady? [they answer louder: “Yes!”] Here, always, don't stop. And pray for me too. Thank you.

Your friends of the same age have prepared a dialogue with Pope Francis for you and with you. Let's listen to the first question from Isidora, 9 years old, from Brazil.
Isidora
Hello, Pope Francis, I am Isidora, I am nine years old, I come from Brazil. Do you think we children can save the Earth?
Pope Francis
Yes. Yes, because you are simple and you understand that destroying the Earth is destroying us. We must protect the Earth: do you understand this? If you destroy the Earth, you destroy yourself. Let's all say it together, slowly, without shouting: "destroying the Earth is destroying us". Let's go! [they repeat] Another time: [they repeat again] And you know, because the Earth gives us everything to live: it gives you oxygen, it gives you water, it gives you herbs, it helps you a lot to live. If we destroy the Earth, we destroy ourselves. All together: whoever destroys the Earth, destroys us. All together: destroying the Earth is destroying us. Thank you!

Now there is Rania, 12 years old, from Palestine.
Rania
Dear Pope Francis, I am Rania and I am of Palestinian origins. I wanted to ask you: but if the third world war begins, will peace never return?
Pope Francis
You asked a question that also affects your land which is suffering so much at the moment. If war breaks out: war has already broken out, dear ones. Hear this: war has broken out all over the world. Not only in Palestine: it broke out in Southern Africa, it broke out in Congo, it broke out in Myanmar, it broke out all over the world. They are hidden wars, in Mozambique... all over the world. We are living in an ugly war and war takes away our peace and takes away our lives. We need to think a little, work for peace. We say it together, in a low voice: "let's work for peace". Everyone! [they repeat]. And this girl, whose name is Rania, her homeland is at war and she suffers a lot. Let's do one thing: in silence, let's say goodbye to Rania and all the people of her homeland. And you let the people of Palestine know that all the children said goodbye. Peace is beautiful. Everyone: “peace is beautiful” [repeat] Thank you, Rania.

Massimo, 10 years old, from Rome.
Maximum
Hello, Pope Francis. I am Massimo and I am Italian. I wanted to ask you: but what do you dream of at night?
Pope Francis
Repeat the question for everyone to hear.
Maximum
But what do you dream of at night?
Pope Francis
You ask me the question: what do I dream of at night? But I don't know what I'm dreaming about, because I'm sleeping! That's right! Sometimes, some dream comes that is a memory of when I was young or I was a child, and I remember these things in a dream. But for the most part, I sleep. And dreaming is beautiful, it's beautiful. When one dreams something, there is something of life inside. Let's say it together: "dreaming is beautiful". All together! [they repeat]. Thank you.

Ivan, 9 years old, from Ukraine.
Ivan
Hi, Papa, I'm Ivan and I'm Ukrainian. But can you explain to us how peace is made?
Pope francesco
This is a very difficult question. How is peace made? Come, come here. It is not easy to say how peace is made. How war is waged is easier, because war is waged with hatred, with revenge, hurting the other, and this comes from instinct. But how do you make peace? Let's think for a minute about his question, which is very intelligent. Her land is at war and she knows how much we need peace. I ask the question; let's think and then see how we respond. How is peace made? We think in silence. [a moment of silence] Have you thought about how peace is made? [they answer: “Yes!”] There is no method for learning to make peace, no. There is a gesture: peace is made with an outstretched hand, with the outstretched hand of friendship, always trying to involve other people to go together. The outstretched hand. I ask you: do you want to make peace? [they answer: “Yes!”] Let's make a gesture, all together: the hand outstretched, all together, you too, all together. The hand is outstretched, this is how peace is made, greeting friends, welcoming everyone home. Peace is made with the heart and with an outstretched hand. Let's say it together: "peace is made with the heart and with an outstretched hand". All together! [they repeat]. Well done. Good boy.

Now there is Kim Ngan, 11 years old, from Vietnam.
Kim Ngan
Dear Pope, I am Kim Ngan, I am 11 years old and I come from Vietnam. I wanted to understand this: if they didn't listen to you, who know so many things, why should they listen to us, and how can they do it?
Pope francesco
Come, come, stay here. Kim Ngan is from Vietnam, and he asks me how can people listen to you children. People are very worried about many things, many things and they forget to listen to the children. But you must say things as you see them, tell the truth, say what you feel because your voice is necessary. Let's all say it together: "the voice of children is necessary". Everyone! The voice of children is necessary. And you must help so that adults listen to us, so that adults listen to you, and then make yourself heard by adults because you are messengers of peace. Let's say together: "children are messengers of peace". Together! [they repeat] Well done. Thank you.

Antrànik, from Syria.
Antrànik, from Syria
Hi, Pope Francis, I'm Antranik and I'm from Syria. In your opinion, why do they kill children during the war and no one defends them?
Pope Francis
Why do they kill children during war? I saw in the war reports, in the news, how many children died. They are innocent, and this shows the evil of war. Because, if only the soldiers were killed, it would be something else; but they kill innocent people, they kill children. Why do they kill children in war? This is cruelty. Now I will make a proposal to you to accompany Atrànik. Why do they kill children in war? Let's all have a short moment of silence and think about the many children killed in the war. It's bad, it's an injustice. Let's think about the children killed. [moment of silence] Why do they kill children during the war and no one defends them? This shows the cruelty of a war: war is always cruel and who "pays for the party"? The children. Innocents are killed. Let us pray together to the Lord for the children: "Our Father who art in Heaven...". Why do they kill children in war? We pray for the children who suffer and are killed in war. And thanks, well done.

And now Celeste, 9 years old, from Peru.
Celeste
Dear Pope, my name is Celeste, I am Peruvian and I wanted to know who your friends are.
Pope Francis
He asks me who my friends are. My friends are the people who live with me at home, they are friends; then I have many friends outside, in some parishes, even some Cardinals are my friends... They are friends. I have the grace of having friends, and this is a grace from God, because the person who has no friends is a sad person. You have understood? The person who has no friends is a sad person. Let's say it together: "the person who has no friends is a sad person". Let's try to have: always have friends. And I thank you for the question: you are a good Peruvian.

Here, now we have seven more questions for the Holy Father. Let's start with Pauline, from Congo, 12 years old.
Pauline
Dear Pope, I'm Pauline, I come from Congo, which you know well. I wanted to ask you what is the most important thing you have experienced in your life?
Pope Francis
He asks me what the most important thing in life is. I couldn't say it, because I have had so many important things in my life... Also, I tell you the truth, this meeting with you is important in my life, because I meet you, your illusions [desires]... But it's always good to think about the moments happiest we have had in life, and leave the bad ones aside, because we have all had bad ones. No, the happy moments. Now, a little silence, and each of us think about what moment was the happiest in our lives. We think in silence. HI. Go on.

Now we have Sofia, 9 years old, from the Philippines.
Sofia
Hi, I'm Sofia and I'm from the Philippines. But when you get angry, how do you calm down?
Pope Francis
Eh, sometimes I get angry. But I don't bite, I don't bite. How do we calm down? Once, a person who helped me a lot in life, when I was a child, told me: "When you are angry, before answering, drink a glass of water". It's good advice: shall we say it together? When you are angry, drink a glass of water before responding. Another time: [they repeat] Because you know that when someone is angry, he doesn't speak, he bites. And that's not nice. We leave anger to the dogs, but we try to be gentle and not let ourselves get caught up in anger. Let's repeat one more time: when you are angry, drink a glass of water. Thank you.

Now we have Luxelle, 9 years old, from Africa.
Luxelle
Hello, Pope Francis, I am Luxelle. Why is it so hot even though it's autumn?
Pope Francis
His question is very important. She asks: why is it so hot in this weather, even though it is autumn? Question this. Do you know why? Because we, the people, do not protect creation, we do not protect nature and nature rebels. We must learn to protect creation, to protect nature and not to dirty nature. Together: “guarding nature”. Together! [they repeat] But, I don't hear... [they repeat louder] Another time! [they repeat] Because nature is our future. Thank you.

Now we have Susai, from Samoa Tonga.
Susai
Hello, Pope Francis, my name is Susai and I come from Samoa and Tonga. I would like to ask you: are you worried about the environment?
Pope Francis
You are from Samoa. She asks me if I'm worried about nature. I am very worried, because nature is being ruined. Just think that at the North Pole the ice has now melted and you can navigate. Consider that a mass of 200 km2 of ice has fallen at the South Pole because the Earth is warming more. Think that the seas are rising and entering the Earth; think that the fish in the sea are ruined because we throw so many things into the sea. That's why I'm worried about nature. We must all be concerned about nature, and we must help. For example: if you are in the river or on the beach and drink a Coca-Cola, do you throw the bottle into the river or the sea? Is this done? [they answer: “No!”] We must protect nature, we must protect creation, because nature contains us, and not ruin it. I am worried about nature, and you must be worried about nature too. Thank you so much for caring about nature. Thank you!

Now we have little Chris, 8 years old, from Haiti.
Chris
Good morning, Pope Francis. My name is Chris and I'm from Haiti. Given that adults with their behavior are leaving us a polluted world, from whom should we children learn to respect our planet?
Pope Francis
Bonjour! We must learn to protect the planet, learn from masters, from professors, even from people who know how to think, from parents, in the family. Guarding creation, because by guarding creation, we guard us who are a part of creation. Please do everything – like children – to protect creation. Let's say it together: “guard creation! Together! [they repeat] Another time! [they repeat]. Thank you.

Now we have Drew, 11 years old, from Australia.
Drew
Hi, Pope Francis, my name is Drew and I'm from Australia. I was wondering how you spend your time during the day.

Pope francesco

What do I do during the days? Work! And there's a lot of work here. I work by listening to people, fixing things, thinking about how to move forward, making things better. I work: I get up early, pray and work. Work is a beautiful thing, because - I'll tell you something - the person who doesn't work, the person who gets used to not working, is a good person? Yes or no? [they reply: “No!”] No. Working is health. Let's say it together! [they repeat] We must learn to always work: work gives you dignity. God's commandment is "earn your bread by your work", earn your living, work. Work gives us dignity. All together: “work gives us dignity”. I don't hear… [they repeat louder] Thanks, good job.

Now we have little Salma, 7 years old, from Ghana.
Salma
Hi, Pope Francis, I'm Salma and I'm from Ghana and can I ask you a question? How can we prevent people from wasting so much stuff?
Pope Francis
She asked us an intelligent question and asked: how can we prevent people from wasting so much stuff? Please, don't waste, don't waste the meal, because there are people who don't eat; always use the meal, don't throw it away: the meal is a grace from God. Each of us must learn not to waste the meal. Let's say it together: "don't waste your meal". All together! [they repeat] And if there is some food left over at midday, eat it in the evening, but don't throw it away: throwing away the meal is a terrible sin. Thank you. Good.
We talked about many beautiful things, but the most beautiful thing that touches your heart is peace, because you don't want war, you want there to be peace in the world. Now, all together we make a peace sign and shake hands, one with the other, we say goodbye. Here, we greet each other by shaking hands as a sign of peace.
[singing as everyone shakes hands]
Now, all together, let's pray a little, let's pray in silence and I will give you the blessing. In silence we receive the blessing. Let us pray to Our Lady: “Hail Mary,…”.
And now, in silence, we receive the blessing, and everyone thinks of their family, thinks of all those to whom they want this blessing to reach. Bless you Almighty God, Father and Son and Holy Spirit.
