Vatican Decision to Close Religious Order Co-Founded by Fr. Marko Rupnik Receives Praise from Abuse Survivors Network

The Vatican has decided to close a religious community co-founded by accused abuser Father Marko Rupnik; the Loyola Community was established in Ljubljana, Slovenia, during the early 1990s by Father Rupnik and Sister Ivanka Hosta, its superior general.
On December 15th, the Slovenian Archdiocese of Ljubljana announced that the Vatican had ordered the Sisters of the Community of Loyola to be dissolved within one year, following a decree issued by the Vatican's Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life.In a December 15th statement, Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests, or SNAP, said while it was "grateful for this decision … we observe that it only came after intense public outcry over Father Rupnik's case."
FULL TEXT Statement: Yesterday, December 14, 2023, Fr. Amedeo Cencini FCC as papal delegate and his colleague S. Marisa Adami SFF and Fr. Viktor Pope OFM. The decree of the Dicastery for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life was presented to the Sisters of the Community of Loyola who came to the Archdiocese and to those who were connected online.
In 2019, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the confirmation of the constitutions of the Loyola Community, Archbishop of Ljubljana Msgr. Stanislav Zore OFM wanted to visit the Loyola Community. At the end of the visitation in February 2020, the competent Roman dicastery informed about the results.

Given that the Loyola Community had its general house in Rome, the Dicastery handed the matter over to the Diocese of Rome. A commissioner was appointed who, after several conversations with all the sisters, wrote a final report, which was sent to the dicastery in September 2022 through the Apostolic Nunciature. On October 20, 2023, he issued a decree on the dissolution of the Loyola Community due to serious problems concerning the exercise of authority and the way of living together.

The dicastery determined that the decree must be implemented within one year.

We are invited to pray for the sisters and everyone connected with the community.
