United Nations Calls on the Government of Nicaragua to Disclose Location of Arrested Bishop Isidoro Mora

United Nations demands information on the whereabouts of Nicaragua's Bishop Isidoro Mora.
"Hide this information and isolate him from his family and legal representatives puts his life and integrity at risk," says the UN office.
The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OACNUDH) for Central America demanded that the Government of Daniel Ortega report on the whereabouts of the Nicaraguan bishop Isidoro Mora, detained since December 20, 2023, amid a wave of arrests of Catholic religious.
"We urge the Government of Nicaragua to urgently report the whereabouts of Bishop (Isidoro) Mora, a victim of forced disappearance for 16 days," the UN agency urged on its X (formerly Twitter) account on January 5.
The OACNUDH warned that "hiding this information and isolating him from his family and legal representatives puts his life and integrity at risk."
Mora, bishop of the diocese of Siuna, in the Caribbean of Nicaragua, was arrested on December 20, 2023, along with seminarians Alester Sáenz Centeno and Tony Palacios, a day after praying during a homily for the imprisoned bishop Rolando Álvarez, convicted in February 2023 to more than 26 years in prison for crimes considered treason after refusing to leave his country.
According to exiled Nicaraguan lawyer and researcher Martha Patricia Molina, author of the study 'Nicaragua: A Persecuted Church?' and that follows up on these cases, the bishop of the diocese of Siuna "was kidnapped by police and paramilitaries when he was on his way to celebrate confirmations in the parish of Cruz de Rio Grande," a municipality in the north of the Central American country.
"One day before his kidnapping he had prayed for Monsignor Rolando Álvarez. To date there is no formal accusation against him and there is no information about his whereabouts," he said.
Two Nicaraguan bishops - among them Monsignor Álvarez, sentenced to more than 26 years in prison -, 13 priests and three seminarians are imprisoned in Nicaragua, according to a report prepared by researcher Molina.
The relations between the Ortega Government and the Catholic Church are experiencing moments of great tension, marked by the expulsion and imprisonment of priests, the prohibition of religious activities and the suspension of diplomatic relations with the Vatican.
