Pope Leo XIV's Private Secretary is a Priest from Peru - Fr. Edgard Ivan Rimaycuna

The Catholic Bishops Conference of Peru released that Pope Leo XIV appointed Fr. Edgard Ivan Rimaycuna Inga, as his private secretary from Peru. The 36-year-old Edgard Ivan Rimaycuna Inga and the current Pope Leo XIV know each other from the time when Robert Prevost was Bishop of Chiclayo. It was in 2016 when Prevost and Rimaycuna, a seminarian at age 17, met.
Rimaycuna and then-Bishop Robert Prevost know each other from their time in the Peruvian diocese of Chiclayo.
According to a Vatican statement, Pope Leo XIV wants to return to the tradition of having a permanent private secretary, which his predecessor, Francis, had interrupted. The Argentinian rotated his secretaries every three to four years; often, several young priests handled his correspondence and appointments.
The last permanent private secretary to a pope was the German Archbishop Georg Gänswein, who served Benedict XVI as Pope Emeritus until his death on December 31, 2022. Pope Francis' last three secretaries: the Argentine Fabián Pedacchio, the Uruguayan Jesuit Gonzalo Aemilius, and the also Argentine Daniel Pelizzon, who will be succeeded by the Peruvian. The office of Papal Private Secretary is not provided for in the Vatican organizational chart; it is however a de facto division of labor.
Fr. Rimaycuna Inga began his training at the Colegio Nacional San José de Chiclayo, where he graduated in 2005. In 2006, he entered the Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo Major Seminary , where the young seminarian met “Father Roberto,” who was his professor, thus beginning a relationship of friendship and spiritual direction from the now Pope.
Fr. Edgard has already accompanied Pope Leo XIV at some of his latest papal audiences.
