How to Receive Plenary Indulgences
In Catholic tradition, November is designated as the Month of the Holy Souls in Purgatory. Beginning with All Saints’ Day (November 1) and All Souls’ Day (November 2), the Church invites the faithful to exercise spiritual charity by offering suffrages—spiritual assistance—for the souls undergoing purification.
Among the most powerful acts of mercy available to Catholics is obtaining a plenary indulgence—the full remission of temporal punishment due to sin—which can be applied exclusively to the souls in Purgatory during November.
1. Primary November Indulgences
According to the official Church manual on indulgences, the Enchiridion Indulgentiarum (Manual of Indulgences), the faithful have specific opportunities to gain plenary indulgences for the holy souls in November:
A. The Cemetery Visit (November 1 – November 8)
The Sacred Work: Devoutly visit a cemetery and pray, even mentally, for the deceased.
Frequency: A plenary indulgence, applicable only to the Holy Souls in Purgatory, is granted on each day from November 1 through November 8.
Reference: Enchiridion Indulgentiarum, Conc. 29 § 1.
B. Visit to a Church or Oratory on All Souls’ Day (November 2)
The Sacred Work: Piously visit a church or public oratory on All Souls' Day and recite:
One Our Father (Pater Noster)
The Apostles' Creed (Credo)
Frequency: This plenary indulgence can be gained once on November 2 and is also applicable exclusively to the souls in Purgatory.

2. Essential Conditions for Receiving a Plenary Indulgence
To validly acquire any plenary indulgence, the faithful must perform the prescribed work and fulfill four fundamental conditions established by Church authority:
+-------------------------------------------------------------------------------+
| FOUR ESSENTIAL PREREQUISITES |
+-------------------------------------------------------------------------------+
| 1. Complete detachment from all sin, including venial sin. |
| 2. Sacramental Confession (within ~20 days before or after). |
| 3. Reception of Holy Communion (preferably the day the work is performed). |
| 4. Prayer for the intentions of the Supreme Pontiff (e.g., Our Father &
Hail Mary). |
+-------------------------------------------------------------------------------+
Key Rule on Frequency: A plenary indulgence can be gained only once per day. One Sacramental Confession suffices for gaining multiple plenary indulgences, but separate Holy Communions and prayers for the Pope's intentions are required for each indulgence.
3. General Ways to Gain a Plenary Indulgence (Any Time in November)
If a cemetery visit is not possible beyond the octave of All Souls, Catholics can still gain plenary indulgences throughout the month of November by performing other ordinary pious works granted by the Church, applying the intention for the dead:
| Pious Work | Minimum Requirement | Citation (Enchiridion) |
| Eucharistic Adoration | Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament for at least 30 minutes | Conc. 7 § 1 |
| Scripture Reading | Devout reading of Sacred Scripture for at least 30 minutes | Conc. 30 |
| Marian Rosary | Recitation of 5 decades of the Rosary in a church, family group, or religious community | Conc. 17 § 1 |
| Stations of the Cross | Devoutly making the 14 Stations of the Cross before legitimately erected crosses | Conc. 63 |
