BREAKING Pope Leo XIV Appoints a New Bishop for China Mons. Joseph Lin Yuntua



The Vatican released that Pope Leo XIV has appointed a new bishop in China. Within the framework of the dialogue for the implementation of the Provisional Agreement between the Holy See and the People's Republic of China, Joseph Lin Yuntuan, age 73, has been appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Fuzhou.
UPDATE According to Asia News IT (a pontifical agency) , Yuntuan was an underground priest and was officially installed as Bishop Cai Bingrui’s auxiliary this morning, but he was first ordained to this post in late 2017.
The Vatican referred to the Sino-Vatican deal, signed in September 2019 and renewed for a third time in October 2024, for Mons. Joseph Lin Yuntuan’s June 5th appointment.

(Vatican News) The Holy See Press Office issued a statement on June 11: "Today, Wednesday, June 11, 2025, the civil validity of the ministry of Bishop Joseph Lin Yuntuan was recognized and he was installed. In the framework of the dialogue related to the implementation of the Provisional Agreement between the Holy See and the People's Republic of China, the Holy Father appointed Yuntuan Lin as the Auxiliary Bishop of Fuzhou (Fujian Province, China) on June 5, 2025."
Archbishop Joseph Cai Bing-rui currently heads the metropolitan Archdiocese of Fuzhou, which was erected in 1946.
“We are pleased to learn that today, on the occasion of Bishop Lin Yuntuan’s official inauguration as Auxiliary Bishop of Fuzhou, his episcopal ministry was also recognized with civil validity. This event is another fruit of the dialogue between the Holy See and the Chinese authorities and an important step in diocesan communion,” the Holy See Press Office said in a statement.

BIOGRAPHY of Bishop Lin Yuntuan

Bishop Lin Yuntuan is a native of Fuqing, Fujian, born on March 12, 1952. He studied at the seminary of the Diocese of Fuzhou from 1979 to 1983 and was ordained a priest on April 9, 1984. He served as parish priest in several parishes from 1984 to 1994 and from 1996 to 2002. In 1985, he taught at the diocesan seminary and served as deputy director of the Diocesan Economic Committee from 1994 to 1996 and from 2000 to 2003. He also served as bishop's representative for many years. From 2003 to 2007, he served as diocesan administrator, and then, from 2013 to 2016, he served as apostolic administrator according to the intention of the Holy See (ad nutum Sanctae Sedis). He was ordained bishop on December 28, 2017.Throughout the world, 84 new bishops were appointed in 2025. Pope Leo XIV, so far, has appointed 15 new bishops in Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, and the U.S.A.
