Poland Elects New President Karol Nawrocki who is Catholic and Pro-Life

In Poland, the pro-life and Catholic, Karol Nawrocki won the extremely close presidential race on June 1, 2025. The liberal candidate of the governing Civic Coalition (KO) party, who announced in his speech following the publication of the results from the first round of voting two weeks ago that he would legalize abortion, was defeated.

A very close result had already been predicted before the election. In the first round, Trzaskowski won 31.36%, narrowly ahead of Karol Nawrocki (29.54%). Since none of the 13 candidates received a majority of the votes in the first round, a runoff election was necessary on Sunday to determine the final outcome between the two top-placed candidates. The final result was announced on Monday, June 2, in the morning – the right-wing conservative Civic candidate Karol Nawrocki, supported by the largest opposition party, Law and Justice (PiS), narrowly secured a majority of the votes with a result of 50.89% to 49.11%, making him the new head of state of Poland. A voter turnout of 71.63% set a new record for presidential elections.
Despite all these adversities, Nawrocki managed to unite the right-wing electorate. This is great news for the pro-life movement, as Nawrocki repeatedly advocated for life from the beginning to natural death, while his opponent during the election campaign promised to relax abortion laws, which are strongly oriented towards the welfare of the child. Furthermore, Nawrocki also presented himself as having a family-oriented policy. During his election campaign, he spoke primarily about security policy. He also signed a declaration that he would act in accordance with Catholic values as president. Nawrocki opposes the European Green Deal, the introduction of the euro, and the Migration Pact.

Karol Tadeusz Nawrocki grew up in a humble family in a district of Gdańsk. He was always interested in history and trained in boxing. He completed a degree and a doctorate in history and rose over the years from a simple civil servant to the position of president of the Institute of National Remembrance. He is married and has three children. He adopted his eldest son, Daniel, whom his wife Marta brought into the marriage. He is a practicing Catholic. He is expected to assume the presidency on August 6 of this year.
