At the conclusion of his weekly General Audience, Pope Leo XIV made an urgent appeal for the people of Gaza. He renewed his call for a ceasefire. According to reports the death toll is nearing 70,000 people killed with over half being women and children. Israeli forces launched a massive new military offensive against Gaza’s largest population centre, Gaza City, on Tuesday, ordering civilians to flee the city amid the most intense bombardment they have faced in almost two years of war. Pope Leo had called Fr. Romanelli, pastor of the Holy Family Catholic parish in Gaza, to check on the 450 people taking refuge in the church compound as Israel intensifies its ground campaign in the city. They have since then lost internet connection with a blackout in Gaza City.
Pope Leo XIV said (continues below the video) - I express my profound closeness to the Palestinian people in Gaza, who continue to live in fear and to survive in unacceptable conditions, forcibly displaced – once again – from their own lands.

Before God Almighty, who commanded “Thou shalt not kill”, and in the sight of all of human history, every person always has an inviolable dignity, to be respected and upheld.
I renew my appeal for a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and a negotiated diplomatic solution, fully respecting international humanitarian law.
I invite you all to join in my heartfelt prayer that a dawn of peace and justice may soon arise.
