Thousands joined online and in-person; there were separate live streams offered in different languages. All men and women of goodwill were invited  to participate remotely - or in person if in Rome - in the “Peace for Gaza” prayer vigil which took place on Monday, 22 September, in Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, Rome.
The vigil was presided over by Cardinal Gualtiero Bassetti in connection with Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, who joined via video link.
The prayer gathering was organised in response to Pope Leo XIV’s recent appeal for “a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and a negotiated diplomatic solution, fully respecting international humanitarian law.”
The initiative brings together a broad range of Catholic associations and communities, including ACLI, AGESCI, Azione Cattolica Italiana, Communion and Liberation, the Pope John XXIII Community, Cooperativa Auxilium, the Christian Workers’ Movement, the Focolare Movement, the Political Movement for Unity, the OFS Secular Franciscan Order, Renewal in the Holy Spirit, and the Union of Superiors General (USG).
The vigil is an occasion to raise a united voice in prayer for peace, the protection of human life, and an end to hostilities. Faithful and people of goodwill are invited to participate. For those unable to attend in person, the vigil was  streamed live on YouTube.
