BREAKING US Bishops Elect 6 New Chairmen to Key Positions at the USCCB and a New Secretary to Replace President Elect Arch. Paul Coakley

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) at their November Plenary Assembly in Baltimore, Maryland, elected six new chairman and a new secretary. The bishops elected Bishop Kevin C. Rhoades (pic. above top right) of Fort Wayne-South Bend, Indiana, as the new conference secretary during their Fall Plenary Assembly in Baltimore on November 12. Bishop Rhoades will fill the position now held by Archbishop Paul Coakley, who is the president-elect of the conference, voted in on Nov. 11 to replace outgoing President Archbishop Timothy Broglio. They will assume their positions in 2026.

In addition to the secretarial election, the bishops also voted to fill six other key leadership roles, electing new chairmen for several USCCB committees.

The 6 newly elected chairmen are:

  • Committee on Canonical Affairs and Church Governance: Archbishop Jeffrey Grob of Milwaukee

  • Committee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs: Auxiliary Bishop Peter L. Smith of Portland, Oregon

  • Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis: Bishop William Wack of Pensacola-Tallahassee

  • Committee on International Justice and Peace: Archbishop Borys Gudziak of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia (pic. above centre)

  • Committee on Protection of Children and Young People: Bishop Mark O’Connell, auxiliary bishop of Boston and soon-to-be-installed bishop of Albany, New York (pic. above top right)

  • Committee on Religious Liberty: Archbishop Alexander Sample of Portland, Oregon (pic. above bottom left)
