BREAKING U.S. President Trump Announces Strikes on Venezuela with Capture of President Maduro and Plans to "run" the Country

The capital of Venezuela, a country in South America, has been hit by a series of attacks that local authorities described as a “U.S. aggression.” US President Trump captured President Nicolas Maduro together with his wife and flown them out of the country.
On 3 January 2026, the United States launched the airstrikes under the codename Operation Absolute Resolve, which targeted multiple locations across northern Venezuela, including the capital city of Caracas. Officials from the United States and other countries have questioned the legality of the strikes. President Trump has indicated that the United States plans to "run" Venezuela until there is a "safe, proper and judicious transition". Trump said the US and American companies will be "very strongly involved" in the Venezuelan oil industry and will be "selling large amounts of oil to other countries".
The White House posted:

"The United States of America has successfully carried out a large scale strike against Venezuela and its leader, President Nicolas Maduro, who has been, along with his wife, first lady Cilia Flores, captured and flown out of the Country. US Attorney General Pam Bondi said they would both face charges of "narcoterrorism". This operation was done in conjunction with U.S. Law Enforcement. Details to follow. There will be a News Conference today at 11 A.M., at Mar-a-Lago. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DONALD J. TRUMP"

It was a series of explosions that struck Venezuela's capital Caracas overnight of Jan. 2/3, along with low-flying aircraft being reported in surveiling the area around 2:00 a.m. local time in several neighborhoods of the city. U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed that the operation was conducted in conjunction with U.S. Law Enforcement and announced a press conference to be held in the coming hours at Mar-a-Lago.

According to journalists at the scene, at least seven detonations hit the metropolitan area, with many residents going out into the streets. Fires and columns of smoke were observed in several parts of the capital, and power outages occurred in some areas of Caracas. The attacks reportedly hit military installations and strategic infrastructure, including the Generalísimo Francisco de Miranda air base in La Carlota, the Fuerte Tiuna military complex, the Mamo Military Academy in La Guaira, the Higuerote air base and airport, as well as areas such as Catia and the 23 de Enero neighborhood. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro declared a nationwide state of emergency.

In official statements, the Caracas government called the attacks to the United States, a “serious military aggression” and a “blatant violation of the United Nations Charter, in particular the principles of sovereignty and the prohibition of the use of force.” The Maduro government accused Washington of seeking to seize the country’s strategic resources, starting with oil and minerals, and of attempting regime change through what it described as a “colonial war” carried out with the support of “local fascist oligarchies.”
