Next Jubilee Year 2033 Announced by Pope Leo XIV will be Celebrated in Jerusalem and You Can Prepare with a Prayer!

As the world officially closes the Jubilee of Hope (2025), the eyes of the Catholic Church—and indeed all of Christendom—are already turning toward a monumental milestone: Jubilee 2033. (See prayer at bottom)

On January 6, 2026, during the Feast of the Epiphany, Pope Leo XIV officially signaled that the next Holy Door to open will be for an Extraordinary Jubilee in 2033. This isn't just another Holy Year; it is being hailed as the "Greatest of all Jubilees."

Announcement: Pope Leo XIV made the 1st announcement during the commemoration of the 1,700th anniversary of the first Ecumenical Council at a private ecumenical encounter at the Syriac Orthodox Church of Mor Ephrem in Istanbul, Turkey. Joining Pope Leo XIV and Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I were representatives from the Eastern Orthodox Churches, the Oriental Orthodox Churches, and other Christian world communions and Ecumenical Organizations, including the Anglican Communion, the Lutheran World Federation, the Baptist World Alliance, the World Evangelical Alliance, and the World Council of Churches. He invited everyone to journey together on the spiritual path leading to the Jubilee of Redemption—the 2,000th anniversary of Jesus’ Passion, Death, and Resurrection—in 2033, with a view to returning to Jerusalem, to the Upper Room, where Jesus washed the feet of His disciples at the Last Supper and later, at Pentecost, sent the Holy Spirit upon them. It is a journey that leads to full unity, the Pope said, recalling his own motto, In Illo uno unum (In the One, we are one).

What is Jubilee 2033?

The year 2033 marks the 2,000th Anniversary of the Redemption. It commemorates the central events of the Christian faith that took place in A.D. 33:

  • The Passion and Death of Jesus

  • The Resurrection

  • The Ascension

  • Pentecost (The "birthday" of the Church)

While "Ordinary" Jubilees typically happen every 25 years (like the one just finished in 2025), "Extraordinary" Jubilees are called to mark special anniversaries or themes.

Why is it so Significant?

1. A Milestone for Unity

Pope Leo XIV has expressed a profound desire for this to be an ecumenical Jubilee. He has already met with leaders like Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople to discuss a common celebration. The goal is for all Christians—Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant—to celebrate the 2,000-year anniversary together, ideally even agreeing on a common date for Easter.

2. A Pilgrimage to Jerusalem

While Rome remains the heart of the Jubilee, Pope Leo XIV has expressed his hope to mark the 2033 celebrations in Jerusalem. Specifically, he aims to celebrate at the Cenacle (the Upper Room), the site of the Last Supper and Pentecost.

3. The "Global 2033" Movement

A massive movement called Global 2033 has already begun. This is a ten-year "decade of evangelization" intended to reach every person on earth with the Gospel by the year 2033. Organizations and dioceses are collaborating to make this the most widespread mission in Church history.

Key Symbols to Watch For

  • The Holy Door: When the Holy Door at St. Peter's Basilica opens in 2033, it will symbolize 2,000 years of "passage" into the grace won by the Resurrection.

  • Plenary Indulgences: As with all Holy Years, the Church will offer special spiritual graces (indulgences) for those who make a pilgrimage, go to confession, and pray for the Pope’s intentions.

  • Ecumenical Crosses: Expect to see symbols emphasizing the "One Lord, One Faith" theme as the Church seeks to heal centuries of division.

"The journey is not finished. 2025 was only a significant step, preparing the way for the great anniversary of our Redemption in 2033." — Archbishop Rino Fisichella

How to Prepare

Even though 2033 is several years away, the "spiritual countdown" has begun. Many are participating in the 20:33 Prayer Campaign, setting an alarm for 8:33 PM (20:33) each night to pray for the success of this Great Jubilee.

Suggested prayer: “May your kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven,” Come Holy Spirit. Veni Creator Spiritus”  Never forget to say the prayer by setting an alarm on your phone at 20:33 (8:33pm) your time zone.
