Vatican Reveals Plans for the 400th Anniversary of St. Peter’s Basilica’s Dedication Including a Mass with Pope Leo XIV

To celebrate the upcoming 400th anniversary of St. Peter’s Basilica’s dedication, Cardinal Mauro Gambetti has announced a sweeping series of spiritual, technological, and cultural upgrades designed to modernize the pilgrim experience.
The anniversary year kicks off on February 20 with the inauguration of a new Via Crucis and will conclude on November 18 with a Holy Mass presided over by Pope Leo XIV.
Technological Innovations
The Vatican is embracing AI and digital solutions to make the Basilica more accessible to a global audience:
Real-Time Translations: Partnering with Translated, the Vatican is launching a multilingual platform using the "Lara" AI. Visitors can scan QR codes to receive real-time audio and text translations of ceremonies directly on their smartphones.
The "Michelangelus" Font: A new institutional typeface inspired by Michelangelo’s own handwriting will be introduced. Developed by Studio Gusto, it is slated for inclusion in the Microsoft Office suite.
Smart Pass System: A new real-time booking system will be implemented to manage visitor flow and preserve the site's prayerful atmosphere.
Expanding Access & Preservation
For the first time, the public will gain access to hidden gems within the monumental complex:
New Viewing Areas: Visitors can explore the entire terrace and its three fan-shaped sections.
The Octagonal Halls: These spaces will display historic architectural models of the Basilica by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger and Michelangelo, alongside pieces from the museum archives.
Structural Monitoring: Through the "Beyond the Visible" project with Eni, the Vatican will use advanced sensors to ensure the permanent structural stability of the Basilica.
Spiritual & Cultural Events
The centenary aims to be a period of "bringing back to the heart" the foundations of faith through:
Spiritual Elevations: Weekly sessions featuring prayer and sacred music.
Petrine Path: A special pilgrimage route following the footsteps of Saints Peter and Paul through Rome.
Theatrical Performances: A production scheduled near the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul on June 29.
"If Pope Julius II once had to rebuild in order to renew, today renewal can take place without demolition, thanks to advanced technologies." — Cardinal Mauro Gambetti
