BREAKING March for Life Portugal is Attacked with Molotov Cocktail in Lisbon

The Patriarch of Lisbon, Bishop Rui Valério, has strongly condemned an act of  violence involving an unignited incendiary device aimed at participants—including families and children—during the March for Life in Lisbon on March 21, 2026. Describing the incident as a "gravely unacceptable" attack on freedom of expression, the Bishop emphasized that violence has no place in a democratic society and urged for a continued climate of peaceful dialogue. Organizers of the nationwide event, which took place in 12 cities, praised the quick response of the Public Security Police (PSP) for preventing injuries and reaffirmed their commitment to the non-violent defense of human dignity.
The 39-year-old suspect accused of throwing a Molotov cocktail at March for Life participants has been released pending trial, under orders to report daily to authorities and stay away from the scene of the incident. While the Minister of Internal Administration warned against rising extremism, the suspect faces charges for possession of a prohibited weapon following the failed attack. The device did not catch fire, but several people were hit by a liquid and their clothes were "impregnated with a substance that had a strong smell of gasoline," according to the PSP (Portuguese Public Security Police). Other people fled the scene, allegedly belonging to a group "with anarchist connotations," according to the PSP (Portuguese Public Security Police).

Statement regarding the act of violence during the March for Life.

The Patriarch of Lisbon received with concern news of an act of violence that occurred during the March for Life today in Lisbon, in a context where families and children were present. The facts are still being investigated, but what has been reported deeply challenges our conscience.

Such events are gravely unacceptable. Violence is never the answer. It does not build, it does not dignify, it does not serve the truth. And it becomes even more painful when it threatens the most vulnerable, especially children, who should always be a beacon of hope and never exposed to fear.

The March for Life stems precisely from the conviction that all human life is an inviolable gift, from conception to natural death. Therefore, any act of violence, especially against a peaceful demonstration, must be clearly condemned.

Bishop Rui Valério expresses his closeness to all who participated in this initiative and, in particular, to the families and children who may have felt fear or insecurity. The Church is close to everyone, accompanies and prays for each one. No situation of violence can erase the good done, the witness given and the hope sown.

The Patriarch of Lisbon calls on everyone – citizens, institutions and authorities – to preserve and promote a climate of respect, freedom and responsibility. Portugal must continue to be a home where differences are expressed peacefully, without fear, and where dialogue prevails over confrontation.
