Chesterton Academy Students from Across the USA on Pilgrimage to the Vatican

U.S. Students Embark on Rome Pilgrimage Inspired by G.K. Chesterton

A group of 240 high school students from across the United States recently arrived in the "Eternal City" to begin a 10-day spiritual and cultural capstone journey.

Representing the Chesterton Schools Network, the pilgrims kicked off their visit with a General Audience in St. Peter’s Square, where they were greeted by Pope Leo.

A Milestone Experience

For many, like Nora Kennedy and Konstantinos Karnezis from the Chesterton Academy of the Holy Family near Chicago, the trip is a long-awaited blessing.

  • Papal Connection: The students were particularly moved to hear the Pope address them in English.

  • The Chaplain's Mission: Fr. Joseph Johnson, the network’s chaplain, noted the significance of the students seeing a Pope from their own land, emphasizing that they are part of a global "family in faith."

The "Apostle of Common Sense"

The network is inspired by the legendary English author and philosopher G.K. Chesterton. Founded by Tom Bengtson and Dale Ahlquist, the schools provide a classical education centered on three pillars:

  1. Intellectual Formation: Studying foundational thinkers like Plato, Homer, and Aquinas.

  2. Character Development: Building virtues through community and discipline.

  3. Spiritual Growth: Daily Mass, adoration, and confession.

"Every Catholic should have the opportunity to walk where saints have walked, to pray where martyrs died, and to touch the stones that witnessed miracles." — Joe Long, CEO of ProRome Tours

A "Sign of Contradiction"

Following the example of their namesake, these students are encouraged to be a "sign of contradiction" to modern secularism. However, Fr. Johnson emphasizes that this opposition isn't about conflict, but about joy. In a world filled with "angry voices," the mission of these students is to witness to the Gospel through hope and love, rather than hostility.

Over the next eight days, the pilgrimage will continue through Florence and Assisi, immersing the students in the art, history, and architecture that have shaped their faith.
