Remembering Lou Holtz (1937–2026)

  • The Milestone: Led Notre Dame to its last consensus National Championship (1988).

  • The Record: 249 career wins; 100-30-2 at Notre Dame.

  • The Traditions: Introduced the "Play Like a Champion Today" sign and removed names from jerseys to emphasize "team first."

  • The Philanthropy: Established "Holtz’s Heroes" and funded the Beth and Lou Holtz Grand Reading Room at Hesburgh Library.

  • The Quote: "Whenever Notre Dame called to ask for his help, Lou answered with his characteristic generosity." — Rev. Robert A. Dowd, C.S.C.

Holtz’s career was defined by remarkable turnarounds. Whether leading Arkansas to an Orange Bowl upset, taking South Carolina from 0-11 to back-to-back bowl wins, or cementing his Hall of Fame status in South Bend, Holtz was a premier tactician of the 20th century. Even in retirement, he remained a fixture of the sport as a beloved broadcaster and a tireless advocate for cancer research. He is survived by his four children, including former coach Skip Holtz.
Beyond his 100 victories in South Bend, Holtz’s legacy is etched into the very fabric of the program—from the iconic "Play Like a Champion Today" sign to his deep philanthropic commitment to student scholarships and campus chapels. University President Rev. Robert A. Dowd, C.S.C., remembered Holtz not just as a coach, but as a "teacher, leader, and mentor" who embodied the mission of the University alongside his late wife, Beth. He leaves behind a legacy of faith, excellence, and an unbreakable bond with the "Holtz’s Heroes" who played for him.
