Pope Leo XIV Moves Into the Apostolic Palace

Vatican City — After nearly a year of residing in the Palazzo del Sant’Uffizio, Pope Leo XIV is officially moving into the papal apartment within the Apostolic Palace. The transition, occurring this Saturday afternoon, was confirmed by Matteo Bruni, Director of the Holy See Press Office.

The move marks a return to tradition for the papacy. Here are the key details of the relocation:

  • The New Residence: Located on the Third Loggia, the renovated apartment includes a library, a small chapel, and the private study famous for the window where the Pope delivers the weekly Angelus.

  • A Shift in Location: Since the start of his pontificate, Leo XIV had remained in his previous quarters at the Palazzo del Sant’Uffizio, where he lived during his tenure as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops.

  • Ending the Vacancy: The apartment had been sealed since the passing of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025. While Pope Francis famously chose to live in the more communal Casa Santa Marta, Leo XIV broke the seals on May 11, 2025, signaling his intent to return to the historic papal suites.

The Third Loggia apartments have served as the official papal residence since the reign of Saint Pius X in the early 1900s. The Pope will be joined in the palace by a small group of his closest collaborators.
