"Prayer and Fasting" are the Only Weapons for Christians - a Message from the Holy Land by Fr. Francesco Patton
Fr. Patton: "Prayer and Fasting" are the Only Weapons for Christians
Speaking from the vantage point of Mount Nebo in Jordan, the former Custos of the Holy Land, Fr. Francesco Patton, has issued a sobering appeal for peace. As he looks across the Dead Sea toward a region engulfed in conflict, his message is clear: the international community must pivot away from military force and toward spiritual and political resolution.
A Region Gripped by "War Madness"
Fr. Patton expressed deep concern over the escalating violence in Lebanon and Gaza, noting that the cycle of force has reached a breaking point.
“We are gripped by a kind of war madness, the idea that everything can be resolved through force and weapons. The thought of civilian victims is constant and deeply present,” he lamented.
He highlighted the dire situation of his fellow friars in Lebanon, where convents have become sanctuaries for the displaced. With one million people currently uprooted in Lebanon, he noted that the population “simply cannot go on.”
The Failure of Military Solutions
Reflecting on the history of the region, Fr. Patton warned that ignoring political solutions only births further radicalization. He pointed out that groups like Al-Qaeda and ISIS were “all the result of attempts at military solutions to conflicts that should have been addressed differently.”
The situation in the Palestinian territories remains particularly grim:
Gaza: Devastated infrastructure where people live in “an open-air sewer” without medicine or security.
The West Bank: Continued settlement expansion and legislative pressures designed for “expelling the Palestinian population from the land on which they have lived for millennia.”
Economic Collapse: A total disappearance of pilgrims has left local Christians without jobs or a “means of support for their families.”
The Call for a "Great Gathering"
Fr. Patton believes the path forward requires a shift in US policy and a massive, unified spiritual response. He envisions a global movement modeled after the efforts of Pope John Paul II and Pope Francis—a “great gathering for all for fasting and prayer for peace.”
While secular critics might dismiss such an approach, Fr. Patton insists it is the only path aligned with Christian values.
“It is a tool that may seem ridiculous compared to weapons, but it is a means of raising awareness that can unite believers of different religions.”
He concluded with a reminder that for the faithful, “prayer and fasting are the only ‘weapons’ we are permitted to take up.”
