US Vice President JD Vance Announces New Book "Communion" on his Conversion to the Catholic Faith

JD Vance to Chronicle Catholic Conversion in Upcoming Book, "Communion"

Vice President JD Vance is set to release a new book this summer detailing his adult conversion to Catholicism. The title, "Communion: Finding My Way Back to Faith," is scheduled for a June 16 release via Harper, an imprint of HarperCollins.

This marks a return to the publisher responsible for his 2016 breakout memoir, Hillbilly Elegy.

Exploring a Reclaimed Faith

Vance, age 41, describes the book as an introspection into why he abandoned the Christian foundations of his youth. In a statement to the AP, Vance noted:

"The interesting question that hangs over this book, and over my mind, is why I ever strayed from the path. Why the Christian faith of my youth failed to properly take root."

According to the publisher, Vance authored the manuscript himself, working on it intermittently since his formal conversion to the Catholic Church in 2019.

Historical and Political Context

While former President Joe Biden was the first Catholic Vice President, Vance identifies as the "first Catholic convert" to hold the office. His tenure, however, hasn't been without friction; he has occasionally clashed with U.S. Catholic bishops, specifically regarding their critiques of the administration's immigration policies.

A Prelude to 2028?

The timing of the release has sparked inevitable speculation regarding Vance's future political ambitions. In the "playbook" of American politics, a major book launch and subsequent media tour often serve as the unofficial opening act for a presidential run.

Vance is not alone in this strategy. Several high-profile figures seen as potential 2028 Democratic contenders—including Gavin Newsom, Josh Shapiro, Andy Beshear, and former VP Kamala Harris—have recently published or announced their own literary projects.
