BREAKING Cardinal Pizzaballa and Leaders Condemn IDF Crucifix Desecration "This act constitutes a grave affront to the Christian faith and adds to other reported incidents of desecration of Christian symbols by IDF soldiers..."

Condemnation of Crucifix Desecration in Lebanon

Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa and the Assembly of Catholic Ordinaries of the Holy Land (AOCTS) have issued a stern condemnation following a viral incident involving an IDF soldier and a religious icon. In the Christian village of Debl, southern Lebanon, a soldier was filmed repeatedly striking a statue of the crucified Jesus with a club.

As of April 17, 2026, Israeli attacks in Lebanon since March 2, 2026, have killed at least 2,294 people and wounded over 7,544, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry. The conflict has displaced over 1.2 million people, with casualties including paramedics, women, and children.

The AOCTS—which represents the Latin, Melkite, Maronite, Armenian, Syriac Catholic, and Chaldean rites across Israel, Palestine, Jordan, and Cyprus—responded with deep indignation to the footage.

Demands for Accountability

The official statement, signed by Cardinal Pizzaballa, does not mince words regarding the implications of the act:

"This act constitutes a grave affront to the Christian faith and adds to other reported incidents of desecration of Christian symbols by IDF soldiers in South Lebanon."

The Assembly further noted that the behavior:

"...reveals a worrying gap in moral and human formation, in which even the most basic reverence for the sacred and for the dignity of others has been severely compromised."

Consequently, the body is demanding:

  • Immediate and decisive disciplinary action.

  • A credible accountability process.

  • Guarantees that such conduct will not be tolerated or repeated.

The Symbolism of the Cross

Amid the ongoing conflict, Cardinal Pizzaballa reaffirmed the spiritual significance of the crucifix. Invoking the words of Saint Paul the Apostle, he stated:

"'Far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ' (Gal 6:14). For believers, the Cross remains a source of dignity, hope, and redemption, as well as an invitation to overcome violence through sacrificial love."

The Cardinal emphasized that true peace cannot be achieved through force. Citing Pope Leo XIV, he reminded the faithful that peace:

"...must remain... unarmed. A peace that invites us to sheathe our swords."

The photo, was posted to X by Palestinian journalist Younis Tirawi, depicts an Israeli soldier hitting the head of a cross with the figure of Jesus crucified with a sledgehammer. The journalist Tirawi, explained that the location as Debel, a village about 54 miles south of Beirut.
Holy Land Leaders
“The Assembly calls for immediate and decisive disciplinary action, a credible process of accountability, and clear assurances that such conduct will neither be tolerated nor repeated,” the Catholic leaders of the Holy Land said in the April 20 statement.

CNEWA Mission Aids Families in Lebanon

Catholic Near East Welfare Association-Pontifical Mission, or CNEWA, provides aid for 430 Maronite Catholic families in Debel, 425 Christian families in the village of Ain Ebel, and 1,400 Maronite Catholic families in Rmeich.

Their aid trucks tried to send both before and after Easter did not receive permission for passage.

Reuters news quoting a priest confirmed that the cross smashed by an Israeli soldier was part of a small shrine in the garden of a family on the edge of the village, said Father Fadi Falfel, living in Debel. “One of the Israeli soldiers broke the cross and did this horrible thing, this desecration of our holy symbols,” he told Reuters.

Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in an April 20 X post: “I condemn the act in the strongest terms.”
