New Vatican Document, “Integral Ecology in the Life of the Family,” - Practical Manual for Translating Theology of Laudato si’ and Amoris Laetitia into Life

The new Vatican document“Integral Ecology in the Life of the Family,” represents a significant collaborative effort between the Dicastery for Promoting Integral Human Development and the Dicastery for Laity, Family, and Life. It serves as a practical manual for translating the high-level theology of Laudato si’ and Amoris Laetitia into the daily rhythms of domestic life.

Below is a summary of the document’s core structure and its primary objectives.

Core Philosophy: The Family as "Fruitful Soil"

The document posits that the family is the primary environment where social and ecological virtues are cultivated. Prefects Cardinal Michael Czerny and Cardinal Kevin Farrell emphasize that the values learned within a home—selflessness, patience, and solidarity—are the same values required to care for the "common home" (the Earth).

Key Family Values Highlighted:

  • Protection of Life: Fostering an environment where every stage of life is valued.

  • Intergenerational Solidarity: Connecting the wisdom of the elderly with the energy of the youth.

  • Reciprocity: Learning how to give and receive within a community.

The Seven Objectives of Integral Ecology

The heart of the volume is organized around seven thematic chapters, derived directly from the Laudato si’ Action Platform. Each chapter provides an explanation, reflections, and concrete actions.

ObjectiveFocus Area
Cry of the EarthAddressing environmental degradation and biodiversity loss.
Cry of the PoorProtecting the vulnerable and those most affected by climate change.
Ecological EconomicsEthical spending, conscious consumption, and supporting fair trade.
Ecological LifestylesReducing waste, practicing sobriety, and mindful living.
EducationRe-thinking and re-designing educational paths toward integral ecology.
Ecological SpiritualityFinding God in creation and fostering a "Eucharistic" view of the world.
Community EngagementMoving from individual family action to broader political and social advocacy.

Practical Application

The document is designed to be highly interactive. Rather than a purely theoretical text, it is formatted to facilitate group study and family meetings:

  1. Explain: Provides the theological and scientific context.

  2. Implicate: Details how these issues manifest in everyday life.

  3. Reflect: Offers questions to prompt deep discussion among family members.

  4. Act: Lists specific, scalable suggestions for change.

Useful cues and indications to families, church groups and individual readers

The volume proposes useful cues and indications to families, church groups and individual readers to address current environmental challenges and to promote the integral development of every person. The first part presents fundamental concepts based on the most significant writings of Pope Francis; the second part, the heart of the volume, contains thematic chapters that reflect seven objectives from Laudato si:

• listening to the cry of the earth

• listening to the cry of the poor and the vulnerable

• adopting and promoting ecological economics

• adopting ecological lifestyles

• integral ecology and education

• ecological spirituality in the family

• families participating in community life

Each chapter is in turn divided into four sections: the explanation of the theme, implications of the theme, questions for reflection and discussion, and proposals for several concrete actions.

The text is currently available for free in five languages on the official websites of both Dicasteries, intended to serve as a "motor" for cultural change starting from the smallest unit of society.
