Commemorating Pope Francis: One-Year Anniversary Events

To mark the first anniversary of the passing of Pope Francis, who died at Casa Santa Marta on April 21, 2025, the Vatican has announced a series of tributes centered at the Basilica of St. Mary Major—his chosen final resting place.

Schedule of Events: Tuesday, April 21

The anniversary program focuses on the deep connection between the late Argentine Pope and the Roman Basilica.

  • 5:00 p.m. – Rosary in the Pauline Chapel: A prayer service held in the location Pope Francis visited over 100 times during his pontificate.

  • Plaque Unveiling: Following the Rosary, a bronze commemorative plaque will be revealed. It features a 160-character Latin inscription honoring his 126 visits to the icon of Salus Populi Romani and his decision to be buried within the Basilica.

  • 6:00 p.m. – Memorial Mass: A solemn liturgy will be celebrated, featuring a special message from his successor, Pope Leo XIV, who is currently traveling in Africa.

How to Watch

For those unable to attend in person, the Vatican is providing multiple ways to join the commemoration:

  • Live Stream: The events will be broadcast live via Vatican News.

  • Public Screening: A large screen will be set up in St. Mary Major Square for pilgrims gathered outside the Basilica.

New Documentary: "The Pope of Mercy"

Vatican News will also premier a 26-minute documentary to honor his legacy. Available with subtitles in English, Spanish, and Italian, the film utilizes archival footage to explore the defining themes of his papacy, specifically his focus on the "peripheries" and his landmark gestures of mercy.

Inscription Preview: "Francis Supreme Pontiff, who paused 126 times in devout prayer at the feet of the Salus Populi Romani; according to his will, rests in this Papal Basilica."
