Pope Leo XIV Meets with Haiti's Prime Minister for Peace Talks at the Vatican with a Special Holy Mass and New Seat of the Embassy

Pope Leo XIV Welcomes Haitian Prime Minister for Vatican Peace Talks

VATICAN CITY — On Saturday morning, May 9, 2026, Pope Leo XIV received the Prime Minister of the Republic of Haiti, Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, in an audience at the Apostolic Palace. The visit highlighted the Holy See's deep concern for the escalating humanitarian and security crises gripping the Caribbean nation.

Diplomatic Dialogue and Strategic Support

Following his meeting with the Pope, Prime Minister Fils-Aimé met with the Vatican’s top diplomats: Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State, and Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States.

The Holy See Press Office described the discussions as "cordial," focusing on several key areas:

  • Church Contribution: Acknowledging the vital role the Catholic Church plays in providing social services amidst Haiti’s instability.

  • National Challenges: Addressing the "unprecedented crisis" involving gang violence, which has displaced 1.4 million people and resulted in over 5,500 deaths in 2025 alone.

  • International Aid: Emphasizing the urgent need for the global community to move beyond indifference and provide systematic support for Haitian institutions.

A Call for Peace: "God Hears the Cry of Victims"

Later that afternoon, Cardinal Parolin presided over a Mass for peace in Haiti at the Sforza Chapel of the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore. Delivering his homily in French, the Cardinal offered a poignant critique of the "inhumane interests" that fuel conflict.

"The true struggle for liberation will be definitively won only when peace of heart is achieved," Parolin stated, echoing the Pope's recent sentiments. "The future belongs to men and women of peace."

Key Themes from the Cardinal's Homily:

  • Against Indifference: Parolin urged the world not to turn a blind eye to the suffering in Haiti, noting that peace is rooted in "the dignity of man" rather than just the absence of war.

  • Institutional Reconstruction: He called for a restoration of harmony through the "respect of law and human rights," aimed at guaranteeing citizens a dignified life.

  • Tribute to Service: The Cardinal offered prayers for the clergy and volunteers in Haiti who continue to serve the weakest members of society, often at great personal risk.

The visit comes on the heels of the Holy See’s recent address to the Organization of American States (OAS), further signaling the Vatican's commitment to acting as a mediator and advocate for Haitian stability on the international stage.

New Seat of the Embassy

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Religious Affairs, and Haitians Living Abroad, Raina Forbin, on May 10th, inaugurated the new seat of the Embassy of Haiti to the Holy See , near the Vatican walls.
