Pope Leo XIV Meets with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio Amid Tensions with President Donald Trump - VIDEO

Vatican Meeting: Pope Leo XIV and Secretary Rubio Reaffirm Ties
Earlier today, May 7, Pope Leo XIV hosted U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the Vatican for a 45-minute private audience. The meeting, described as a moment to reaffirm bilateral commitments, focused heavily on global stability and humanitarian crises.
A Warm Reception and Diplomatic Dialogue
The atmosphere at the start of the meeting was notably personal. Recalling their previous encounter, the Pope and Secretary Rubio shared a brief, lighthearted exchange: Secretary Rubio: “What a pleasure to see you again. Almost a year has passed!” Pope Leo XIV: “One more day… No, ten more days!”

The Pope's reference to “...ten days to go!” referred to their last meeting. This current meeting follows a period of public tension, specifically after recent criticisms of the Pope by President Donald Trump, to which the Pontiff responded this past Tuesday.
Focus on Global Conflict
Following the papal audience, Rubio met with Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher at the Secretariat of State. According to an official Vatican statement, the discussions were “cordial” and focused on:
Bilateral Relations: A “shared commitment to cultivating good bilateral relations between the Holy See and the United States of America was renewed.”
Conflict Zones: An “exchange of views on the regional and international situation, with particular attention to countries marked by war, political tensions, and difficult humanitarian situations, as well as on the need to work tirelessly for peace.”
The Holy See Press Office specifically noted concerns regarding “countries in Africa and the Middle East, particularly Lebanon and Iran,” as well as the situation in “Cuba,” where both parties emphasized the “need for support for the Cuban people.”
Logistics and Security
Rubio’s arrival at the Vatican was marked by heavy security, with helicopters overhead and a cleared Via della Conciliazione. He was greeted by Monsignor Petar Rajič with a simple, "Welcome to the Vatican!" before being joined by Ambassador Brian Burch.
The U.S. State Department echoed the Vatican's sentiments, noting that the dialogue "demonstrated the solid and enduring partnership between the United States and the Holy See in support of religious freedom." Rubio later reinforced this on X, stating his goal was "to underscore our shared commitment to promoting peace and human dignity."
The Exchange of Gifts
The visit concluded with a traditional exchange of symbolic gifts between the Pontiff and the U.S. delegation:
From Secretary Rubio: A crystal football featuring the State Department seal. Rubio quipped to the Pope, “You're a baseball guy… You're a baseball fan,” as he presented the gift.
From Pope Leo XIV: A volume of photos of the Sistine Chapel, a book on the Apostolic Palace, and an olive wood pen. The Pope noted the symbolism of the latter, stating, “The olive tree is a plant of peace.”
Secretary Rubio is scheduled to continue his Italian visit tomorrow with meetings involving Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and other high-ranking Italian officials.
