Washington Nationals Baseball Team Dismisses Team Executive after Undercover Video Reveals Discrimination of Catholic Player Trevor Williams
The Washington Nationals have dismissed a team executive following the release of an undercover, hidden-camera video in which he suggested the organization intentionally restricted social media coverage of a conservative, Catholic player.
The Incident
The controversy surfaced after activist James O’Keefe and the O'Keefe Media Group posted footage on X (formerly Twitter) featuring Sean Hudson, the Nationals' Director of Community Relations.
In the secretly recorded footage, Hudson discussed starting pitcher Trevor Williams, describing him as a "super Christian-Catholic" and referencing a 2023 controversy where Williams publicly criticized the Los Angeles Dodgers for honoring the "Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence," a drag group that utilizes Catholic imagery.
In the video, Hudson stated that due to Williams' public stance, the team actively avoided featuring him on its official social media channels. The footage also showed Hudson making wide-ranging claims about internal team business, including asserting that the franchise uses high-level surveillance to look into fans' Google search histories and hosting company meetings restricted exclusively to LGBTQIA+ staff members.
The Fallout
The video quickly drew fierce backlash and prompted the conservative Catholic advocacy organization, CatholicVote, to file a formal complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division, demanding an investigation into potential Title VII employment discrimination violations based on religion.
The Washington Nationals moved quickly to distance themselves from the comments and terminate Hudson's employment.
"The statements are not only factually incorrect, but do not reflect the views, opinions, or actions of the Washington Nationals. The Nationals are dedicated to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for our players, fans, and staff, and we vehemently deny any allegations to the contrary." — Official Statement from the Washington Nationals
When initially confronted about the footage by an independent reporter over the phone, Hudson claimed the remarks "didn't sound like something he would say" before subsequently deactivating his social media presence.
