A Statement from Krisanne Vaillancourt Murphy on Gov. Mike DeWine’s Press Conference on the Death Penalty.
Krisanne Vaillancourt Murphy, executive director of Catholic Mobilizing Network, responds to the Tuesday press conference held by Ohio Governor Mike DeWine on the death penalty.
“I thank Governor Mike DeWine for publicly announcing his stance on the death penalty: ‘The moral justification I had for voting for the death penalty simply no longer exists.’
His call for the abolishment of capital punishment in Ohio is an encouraging sign and reflects growing recognition that the state can move toward a more just and life-affirming approach.
There currently are 114 individuals on death row in Ohio. Throughout his term, Governor DeWine has upheld a moratorium on executions. I am so grateful for his dedicated leadership and conviction on this pro-life issue.
Governor DeWine is a Catholic whose faith has always inspired his public service. As fellow Catholics who advocate for the dignity of every human life, we urge him to go further and grant clemency to those on Ohio’s death row. The time to act is now.
Returning death for death only perpetuates cycles of harm and violence. We as a people of faith are called to show mercy, to believe in the power of redemption, and to provide opportunities for all people to experience healing and wholeness.”
