Fiat Topolino Arrives in the Vatican: ‘Together for Sustainable Mobility’
VATICAN CITY — The Fiat Topolino has officially made its debut in Vatican City, marking a significant step forward in a joint initiative dedicated to sustainable and eco-friendly urban mobility.
As part of a new partnership with the historic Italian car manufacturer, the Holy See is integrating 30 electric micro-vehicles into its fleet to support its "Ecological Conversion 2030" green plan. This initiative aims to drastically cut emissions within the world’s smallest state using some of the market's smallest and most efficient electric vehicles - with the goal of achieving a zero-emission fleet by the end of the decade.
The collaboration was officially inaugurated at the Governorate Palace square, set against the backdrop of St. Peter's Basilica. The official handover ceremony featured the delivery of the first 20 Fiat Topolino quadricycles, which will be utilized by Governorate employees for internal operations and transit.
The vehicle lineup also includes the Fiat Tris, a newly designed commercial electric tricycle tailored specifically for the maintenance and care of the Vatican Gardens.
The handover ceremony was attended by several high-ranking figures, including the Governorate's General Secretaries—Archbishop Emilio Nappa and attorney Giuseppe Puglisi-Alibrandi—alongside Olivier François, CEO of FIAT and CMO of Stellantis, and Gaetano Thorel, Head of Enlarged Europe for Fiat.
"We are incredibly proud to be part of the Vatican's sustainability roadmap," said Olivier François during the presentation. "Our shared commitment with the Governorate reinforces a mutual desire to promote a more responsible, humane, and sustainable form of transit. The Topolino and the Tris are vehicles designed to serve rather than dominate, operating completely silently to preserve the quiet nature of this historic environment."
The initiative marks a practical step forward for the Holy See's environmental goals, demonstrating how electric micro-mobility can successfully replace larger, more cumbersome combustion vehicles in closed urban communities and historical centers.
