Pope Leo XIV's Official Schedule and Theme for his Historic 1st Trip to Monaco - where Catholicism is the State Religion - Released by the Vatican

Pope Leo XIV Set for Historic Apostolic Journey to Monaco

The Holy See Press Office has officially released the itinerary for Pope Leo XIV’s upcoming visit to the Principality of Monaco on Saturday, March 28, 2026. This nine-hour journey marks a significant milestone: it is the Pope's first European visit and kicks off a busy international schedule that includes trips to Africa in April and Spain in June.

The visit is particularly symbolic as Monaco is a nation where Catholicism is the state religion by Constitution. Archbishop Dominique-Marie David noted that the event serves to reaffirm the bond between the Grimaldi family and the Successors of Peter, focusing on shared values like the "safeguarding of our 'common home'" and a "passion for sport."

The Official Schedule: March 28, 2026

The Pope will travel via helicopter, departing the Vatican at 7:00 a.m. and arriving at the Monaco Heliport by 9:00 a.m.

Key Themes and Messaging

Prince Albert II, who met with the Pope earlier this year, described the visit as having a “dual dimension, both institutional and pastoral,” calling it a “strong sign of hope in a spirit of dialogue, peace, and shared responsibility.”

Motto and Scriptural Significance

The chosen motto for the journey is taken from John 14:6:

“Je suis le Chemin, la Vérité et la Vie” (“I am the way, the truth, and the life”)

Symbolism of the Logo

The official logo balances the religious and the secular:

  • The Pope: A black-and-white image of a smiling Leo XIV to “express the spiritual and pastoral dimension of the visit.”

  • The Principality: A light yellow stylized tower of the Prince’s Palace, which, when paired with the white background, evokes the Vatican flag.

  • National Identity: The name “Léon XIV” sits above “Monaco,” which is rendered in the bright red of the Monegasque flag.

This visual identity is designed to show the Pope’s mission “harmonized with the welcome of the Principality.”
