Vatican Synod Unveils First of Final Reports from Study Groups Highlighting Mission in a Digital Environment

Synod Office Unveils First Final Reports from Study Groups

The General Secretariat of the Synod has officially released the first two Final Reports from the Study Groups established by Pope Francis following the XVI Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops. These initial documents focus on Study Group No. 3, regarding 'The mission in the digital environment,' and Study Group No. 4, concerning 'The revision of the Ratio Fundamentalis Institutionis Sacerdotalis in a missionary synodal perspective.'

A Milestone in Synodal Practice

The publication of these reports, directed by Pope Leo XIV, aims to share the fruits of ecclesial discernment with the "People of God" through a transparent and accountable process. Available in English and Italian, the reports are accompanied by multilingual summaries to ensure broad accessibility.

With the submission of these documents, Groups No. 3 and No. 4 have completed their mandates and are now dissolved. The General Secretariat intends to release further reports progressively, with the next set due on 10 March 2026.

Cardinal Mario Grech, Secretary General of the Synod, noted that these reports:

“beyond the value of their content," "testify to the shared journey undertaken with the Dicasteries."

He further emphasized the depth of this collaboration:

"It is not the first time that the Dicasteries have collaborated on a common project, but here," he added, "there is something more: an authentic exercise of shared listening, reflection, and discernment. It is synodality put into practice, not merely bureaucratic cooperation.”

Focus 1: Mission in the Digital Environment

Study Group No. 3 explored how the Church can inhabit a culture increasingly defined by digital spaces. After consulting global experts and pastoral workers, the group highlighted several priorities:

  • Integrating digital mission into standard Church structures.

  • Analyzing how "territorial jurisdiction" functions alongside online communities.

  • Training pastors and workers specifically for digital culture.

The report offers operative proposals for the Holy See, Episcopal Conferences, and individual dioceses.

Focus 2: Formation to the Priesthood

Rather than rewriting the 2016 Ratio Fundamentalis Institutionis Sacerdotalis, Study Group No. 4 created a Proposal for a Guiding Document to implement it through a synodal lens.

The report identifies several "necessary conversions" for priestly formation—relational, missionary, and communal. A core tenet of the proposal is that a priest's identity is formed “in and from” the People of God, rather than in isolation.

Key recommendations include:

  • Alternating residency between seminaries and parish communities.

  • Shared formative experiences between clergy, consecrated persons, and the lay faithful.

  • Involving qualified women as co-responsible members of formation teams.

Nature and Next Steps

The General Secretariat clarified that these are working documents born from a structured process of listening, academic research, and prayer.

To turn these reflections into action, Pope Leo XIV has requested that the competent Dicasteries and the General Secretariat develop "operative proposals" based on these reports. These proposals will eventually be submitted to the Holy Father for evaluation and potential approval, ensuring the synodal journey remains rooted in the Church's missionary perspective.
