US Bishops' Chairman Reveals 7 Keys in Reflection for the Consecration of America to the Sacred Heart of Jesus

As we prepare this summer to consecrate our United States to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, I'd like to share some thoughts on why we should genuinely rejoice in this consecration.

Let's take a moment to reflect on the title Sacred Heart of Jesus.

1. What does this special title truly mean? What is it referring to?

Let's briefly explore. Let's start with the heart. Every person, including Jesus, has a heart. Jesus's heart reflects his full humanity, even as he possesses a divine nature. In sacred scripture, the heart is often depicted as the center and totality of the person. The heart is also frequently seen as a symbol of love, and Jesus's heart shows us love most tenderly, warmly inviting us to experience it. Jesus's heart is also sacred, meaning holy and fully devoted to God. The sacred heart of Jesus reminds us that like us, he was human and that he dedicated his life in this world to fulfilling God's will completely.

2. Love Flowing

The love flowing from his sacred heart, demonstrated through his sacrifice, sets us free from sin and is offered to everyone, no matter how unworthy we might feel. Even though none of us is perfect, love and forgiveness are freely given from Jesus's sacred heart, encouraging us all to grow into the best disciples we can be.

3. Across the Country

Across our country, it seems to me, especially in the South, where my roots are, many families treasure having an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in their homes. It might hang in the kitchen above the dining table or near the front door to welcome visitors. Chances are you might have one in your own home right now.

4. Decoration?

Also, for us, that image is more than just decoration. It's a gentle reminder that Jesus's love is always nearby, simple, tender, and personal. This cherished image reflects Jesus's humanity, love, and devotion to the Father. Even more importantly, it reminds us that when we pray, we're not just speaking into the air. We're talking to someone whose heart burns with love for us.

5. Personal Relationship with Jesus

The sacred heart of Jesus is about building a relationship, an authentic, heartfelt friendship with Jesus. We can trust that Jesus sees us as he points to his heart overflowing with love. He knows us deeply. He understands our story and he cares about our needs. As we dedicate our country to the sacred heart of Jesus, I pray that Jesus's heart will continue to become the gentle and peaceful center of our lives, embracing our homes, parishes, neighborhoods, and nation, drawing each person into his comforting warmth.

6. Tired

Especially now when many of us are feeling tired, divided, or lonely. Jesus Christ patiently offers us his sacred heart in the wounds and challenges of our marriages, families, and friendships, amid financial worries or illness, and in our battles with addiction or loneliness. Jesus is always present, inviting us to draw nearer to him. He extends this invocation not because we are perfect or have everything figured out but simply because he loves us from the depths of his sacred heart.

7. True Meaning of the Consecration

As our country is consecrated to the sacred heart of Jesus, we are all entrusted to his grace. We are also reminded that Jesus is one of us. He has won the victory over sin and death and he longs for us to come to him. Jesus longs for the heartbeat of his love to resound in our world, in our country, and in our lives. Sacred heart of Jesus, I trust in thee. Amen.
