 Pope Leo XIV: Technology Must Serve Truth and the Common Good

The pope sent a message to the Seventh International Seminar on Church Communication in Santiago, Chile, taking place on 27-28 July at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile in Santiago. Pope Leo XIV urged communicators to ensure artificial intelligence and digital tools serve "truth and the common good" while protecting human dignity. "Everything that happens to us also happens there," he said, proposing four essential criteria for communication: truth, goodness, beauty and usefulness. "Today there is much discussion about artificial intelligence," he noted, "but this Encyclical speaks above all about human dignity and truth."

Signed by Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, the Pope’s message encouraged participants to approach AI with "wisdom and responsibility" to foster genuine human connection and support the Church's mission.

The seminar focused on the ethical implications of AI in light of Pope Leo's Encyclical, Magnifica humanitas. Highlights from the conference included:
