Callao to Erect 14-Meter Statue in Honor of Pope Leo XIV Ahead of Visit to Peru
As part of the preparations for Pope Leo XIV's official visit to Peru—scheduled for November 11–16, 2026—the Provincial Municipality of Callao announced the construction of a 14-meter-tall monument honoring the pontiff. The sculpture aims to recognize the pastoral work and support provided by Robert Prevost in the Diocese of Callao, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Monument Features:
The imposing sculpture, set to become the largest of its kind in the country, will be located in the future 'Gaelito' Children's Park, a recreational space to be built along the Costa Verde section leading toward Chucuito.
Key technical specifications and artistic details include:
* Dimensions: The main metallic structure will stand 12 meters tall with a marble-like finish, set atop a 2-meter pedestal for a total height of 14 meters.
* Weather Resistance: Due to its seaside location and exposure to coastal winds, the structure is designed to withstand wind gusts of up to 120 km/h.
* Sculptors & Funding: The artwork is being created by sculptors Deyvi Wong Arana and Rafael Gutiérrez Quispe. The project is funded through a donation from Caja Huancayo and has been approved by the Provincial City Council.
Provincial Mayor César Pérez emphasized that both the statue and the new park are intended as symbols of faith, hope, and unity for local families, as well as a source of pride for Callao. The monument is scheduled to be unveiled during the Pope's stay in the country.

As part of the papal itinerary in the capital, the Archbishop of Lima, Cardinal Carlos Castillo, confirmed four main events. Among the most anticipated is a massive youth gathering expected to take place in one of Lima's major venues (such as the National Stadium, San Marcos, or Monumental Stadium). These activities form part of the spiritual programming dedicated to Saint Turibius of Mogrovejo in Peru.
