Pope Francis Prays Traditional entrustment prayer to Our Lady on Immaculate Conception - Full Text + Video

Pope entrusts sinners to Mary in prayer for Immaculate Conception
Pope Francis visits Rome’s Piazza di Spagna on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and prays that Our Lady may help free us from corruption of heart.
By Vatican News

During his Sunday Angelus address in St Peter’s Square, Pope Francis announced he would be visiting Piazza di Spagna to perform what he called “the traditional act of homage at the foot of the monument to the Immaculate Conception”. He asked all those present to join him spiritually in this gesture, which, he said, “expresses our filial devotion to our heavenly Mother”.

Blessed Pius IX
The statue of Our Lady stands above a 12-metre high ancient Roman column. It was placed here on September 8th 1857 and commemorates Pope Pius IX’s proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception, stating that Mary is the only human being who was born without original sin.

Venerable Pius XII
The column and statue were originally erected with the help of 220 firemen, which is why the floral tributes always include a garland of flowers placed in Our Lady’s arms by a member of Rome’s fire department. The tradition of offering flowers to her image here on this feast day was begun by Pope Pius XII.

Pope Francis
When he arrived in Piazza di Spagna on Sunday afternoon, Pope Francis addressed his own prayer to Our Lady at the foot of the monument. He entrusted to her all those in Rome and throughout the world, who are burdened “by discouragement because of sin; those who think there is no longer hope for them, that their sins are too many and too great, and that God certainly does not have time to waste with them”.

The Pope thanked our Immaculate Mother for reminding us that, because of Jesus’ love “we are no longer slaves to sin, but free, free to love, free to love one another, to help one another as brothers and sisters, despite our differences”.

Below please find the unofficial Vatican News translation of the Holy Father’s prayer:

O Mary Immaculate,
we gather around you once again.
The more we move forward in life
the more our gratitude to God increases
for giving as a Mother to us who are sinners,
you, the Immaculate Conception.
Of all human beings, you are the only one
preserved from sin, as Mother of Jesus,
the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.
But this singular privilege of yours
was given to you for the good of us all, your children.
In fact, looking at you, we see the victory of Christ,
the victory of God's love over evil:
where sin abounded, namely, in the human heart,
grace has overflowed all the more,
through the gentle power of Jesus’ Blood.
You, Mother, remind us that we are sinners,
but we are no longer slaves to sin!
Through His Sacrifice, your Son
has broken the rule of evil, and has overcome the world.
This tells all generations about your heart,
clear as the sky where the wind has dissipated every cloud.

And so you remind us that being sinners and being corrupt
is not the same thing: it's very different.
It is one thing to fall, but then, repenting,
to get up again with the help of God's mercy.
Something else is hypocritical conspiracy with evil,
corruption of the heart, that appears faultless on the outside,
but inside, is full of evil intentions and nasty selfishness.
Your crystal-clear purity calls us back to sincerity,
transparency, simplicity.
How much we need to be liberated
from corruption of heart, which is the greatest danger!
This seems impossible to us, we are so accustomed to it,
yet it is within easy reach. It is enough to look up
at your Mother's smile, at your unspoiled beauty,
to feel once more that we are not meant for evil,
but for good, for love, for God!

For this reason, O Virgin Mary,
today I entrust to you all those who, in this city
and throughout the world, are burdened by disillusionment,
by discouragement because of sin;
those who think there is no longer hope for them,
that their sins are too many and too great,
and that God certainly does not have time to waste with them.
I entrust them to you, because not only are you a Mother
and as such, you never stop loving your children,
but you are also Immaculate, full of grace,
and you can reflect into the darkest gloom
a ray of the Risen Christ’s light.
He, and He alone, breaks the chains of evil,
frees from the most acute dependencies,
unties from the most criminal bonds,
softens the hardest of hearts.
And if this happens within people,
how the face of the city changes!
In small gestures and big choices,
vicious circles gradually become virtuous,
the quality of life improves
and the social climate becomes more breathable.

We thank you, Immaculate Mother,
for reminding us that, because of Jesus Christ’s love,
we are no longer slaves to sin,
but free, free to love, to love one another,
to help one another as brothers and sisters, despite our differences —
and thank you for the differences between us.
Thank you, because with your purity, you encourage us
not to be ashamed of good, but of evil;
you help us to keep at a distance the evil one,
who deceives us and draws us to himself, into coils of death;
you grant us the gentle reminder that we are children of God,
Father of immense goodness,
eternal source of life, beauty and love. Amen.

Novena for the Immaculate Conception of Mary : Powerful Prayers with a Plenary Indulgence

The Immaculate Conception – Celebrating the Blessed Virgin’s Mary’s conception as freed from all sin -

Feast: December 8

Plenary indulgence to all who shall assist at these Novenas every day, and who shall afterwards, either on the Feast-day itself, to which each Novena respectively has reference, or on some one day in its Octave, after Confession and Communion, pray to our Lord and to the Blessed Virgin according to the pious intention of the Sovereign Pontiff.

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful, and kindle in them the fire of Thy love.

V. Send forth Thy Spirit, and they shall be created.
R. And Thou shalt renew the face of the earth.

Let us pray.
O God, who hast taught the hearts of Thy faithful people by the light of the Holy Spirit; grant us in the same Spirit to relish what is right, and evermore to rejoice in his holy comfort. Through Christ our Lord. R. Amen.

Virgin most pure, conceived without sin, all fair and stainless from thy Conception; glorious Mary, full of grace, Mother of my God, Queen of angels and of men, - I humbly venerate thee as Mother of my Saviour, who, though He was God, taught me by His own veneration, reverence, and obedience to thee, the honour and homage which are due to thee. Vouchsafe, I pray thee, to accept this Novena, which I dedicate to thee. Thou art the safe refuge of the penitent sinner; it is very fitting, then, that I should have recourse to thee. Thou art the Mother of compassion; then wilt thou surely be moved with pity for my many miseries. Thou art my best hope after Jesus; thou canst not but accept the loving confidence that I have in thee. Make me worthy to be called thy son, that so I may dare to cry unto thee,
Monstra te esse matrem.
Show thyself a mother.

Nine Ave Maria’s, one Gloria Patri, and the following Prayer.

Behold me at thy sacred feet, O Immaculate Virgin. I rejoice with thee, because from all eternity thou wast elected to be the Mother of the Eternal Word, and wast preserved stainless from the taint of original sin. I praise and bless the Most Holy Trinity, who poured out upon thy soul in thy Conception the riches of that privilege. I humbly pray thee to obtain for me grace effectually to overcome the sad effects produced in my soul by original sin; make me wholly victorious over them, that I may never cease to love my God.

After the Litanies, or Hymn as above, say as follows:

V. All fair art thou, O Mary.
R. All fair art thou, O Mary.
V. The original stain is not in thee.
R. The original stain is not in thee.
V. Thou art the glory of Jerusalem.
R. Thou art the joy of Israel.
V. Thou art the honour of our people.
R. Thou art the advocate of sinners.
V. O Mary.
R. O Mary.
V. Virgin most prudent.
R. Mother most clement.
V. Pray for us.
B. Intercede for us to our Lord Jesus Christ.

V. In thy Conception, O Virgin, thou wast immaculate.
R. Pray for us to the Father, whose Son was born of thee.

Let us pray.
O God, who through the Immaculate Conception of a Virgin didst prepare a worthy dwelling-place for Thy Son, we beseech Thee, who by the death of that Son, foreseen by Thee, didst preserve her from every stain of sin, to grant that by her intercession we also may be purified, and so may come to Thee.

O God, the Shepherd and Ruler of all the faithful, graciously look down upon Thy servant N., whom Thou host chosen to be the pastor of Thy Church; and grant him, we beseech Thee, both by word and example, so to direct those over whom Thou hast placed him, that, together with the flock entrusted to his care, he may attain eternal life.

O God, our refuge and strength, who art the author of all holiness, listen to the pious prayers of thy Church, and grant that what we ask in faith we may effectually obtain. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The same order is to be observed en all the other days of the Novena, the Prayers for the Day alone being changed.

Mary, unsullied Lily of purity, I rejoice with thee, because from the first moment of thy Conception thou wast filled with grace, and hadst given unto thee the perfect use of reason. I thank and I adore the Ever-blessed Trinity, who gave thee these high gifts. Behold me at thy feet overwhelmed with shame to see myself so poor in grace. O thou who wast filled full of heavenly grace, grant me a portion of that same grace, and make me a partaker in the treasures of thy Immaculate Conception.
Litanies, &c., as before.

Mary, mystic Rose of purity, I rejoice with thee at the glorious triumph thou didst gain over the serpent by thy Immaculate Conception, in that then wast conceived without original sin. I thank and praise with my whole heart the Ever-blessed Trinity, who granted thee that glorious privilege and I pray thee to obtain for me courage to overcome every snare of the great enemy, and never to stain my soul with mortal sin. Be thou always mine aid, and enable me with thy protection to obtain the victory over all the enemies of man’s eternal welfare.
Litanies, &c., as before.

Mary, Immaculate Virgin, Mirror of holy purity, I rejoice exceedingly to see how from thy Immaculate Conception there were infused into thy soul the most sublime and perfect virtues, with all the gifts of the Most Holy Spirit. I thank and praise the Ever-Blessed Trinity, who bestowed upon thee these high privileges, and I beseech thee, gracious Mother, obtain for me grace to practise every Christian virtue, and so to become worthy to receive the gifts and graces of the Holy Ghost.
Litanies, &c., as before.

Mary, bright Moon of purity, I congratulate thee in that the mystery of thy Immaculate Conception was the beginning of salvation to the human race, and was the joy of the whole world. I thank and bless the Ever-blessed Trinity, who did so magnify and glorify thy Person. I entreat thee to obtain for me the grace so to profit by the Death and Passion of thy dear Son, that His Precious Blood may not have been shed upon the cross for me in vain, but that after a holy life I may be saved.
Litanies, &c., as before.

Mary Immaculate, brilliant Star of purity, I rejoice with thee, because thy Immaculate Conception brought exceeding joy to all the angels in Paradise. I thank and bless the Ever-blessed Trinity, who enriched thee with this privilege. Enable me also one day to take part in this heavenly joy, praising and blessing thee in the company of angels world without end. Amen.
Litanies, &c., as before.

Mary immaculate, rising Morn of purity, I rejoice with thee, and I am filled with admiration at beholding thee confirmed in grace and rendered sinless from the first moment of thy Conception. I thank and praise the Ever-blessed Trinity, who elected thee alone from all mankind for this especial privilege. Holiest Virgin, obtain for me an entire and lasting hatred of sin, as the worst of all evils, that I may rather die than ever again commit a mortal sin.
Litanies, &c., as before.

Mary, Virgin, Sun without stain, I congratulate thee, and I rejoice with thee, because God gave unto thee in thy Conception a greater and a more abundant grace than He gave to all His angels and His saints together, even when their merits were most exalted. I thank and admire the immense beneficence of the Ever-blessed Trinity, who hath dispensed to thee alone this privilege. O, enable me too to correspond with the grace of God, and never more to receive it in vain; change my heart, and help me to begin in earnest a new life.
Litanies, &c., as before.

Immaculate Mary, living Light of holiness, Model of purity, Virgin and Mother, as soon as thou wast conceived thou didst profoundly adore thy God, giving Him thanks, because by means of thee the ancient curse was blotted out, and blessing was again come upon the sinful sons of Adam. Let this blessing kindle in my heart love towards God; and do thou inflame my heart still more and more, that I may ever love Him more constantly, and afterwards eternally enjoy Him in heaven, there to thank and praise Him more and more fervently for all the wondrous privileges conferred on thee, and to rejoice with thee for thy high crown of glory.
Litanies, &c., as before.

St. Peter's Square
Sunday, December 8, 2019

Dear brothers and sisters, good morning!

Today we celebrate the solemnity of Mary Immaculate, which is placed in the context of Advent, a time of waiting: God will accomplish what he has promised. But in today's celebration we are told that something has already been accomplished, in the person and in the life of the Virgin Mary. Today we consider the beginning of this fulfillment, which is still before the birth of the Mother of the Lord. In fact, his immaculate conception leads us to that precise moment when Mary's life began to palpitate in her mother's womb: already there was the sanctifying love of God, preserving her from the contagion of evil that is a common heritage of the human family .
In today's Gospel the greeting of the Angel to Mary resounds: "Rejoice, full of grace: the Lord is with you" (Lk 1:28). God has always thought and wanted it, in his inscrutable design, as a creature full of grace, that is filled with his love. But to be filled, it is necessary to make space, empty oneself, step aside. Just as Mary did, who knew how to listen to the Word of God and totally trust her will, accepting it unreservedly in her life. So much so that in her the Word has become flesh. This was possible thanks to his "yes". To the Angel who asks her availability to become the mother of Jesus, Mary replies: "Behold the handmaid of the Lord: let it be for me according to your word" (v. 38).

Mary does not lose herself in so many arguments, she does not put obstacles in the way of the Lord, but relies quickly and leaves room for the action of the Holy Spirit. He immediately makes available to God all his being and his personal history, so that the Word and the will of God may shape them and bring them to completion. Thus, corresponding perfectly to God's plan for her, Mary becomes the "all beautiful", the "all holy", but without the slightest hint of complacency. He is humble. She is a masterpiece, but remaining humble, small, poor. In her is reflected the beauty of God which is all love, grace, self-giving.

I also like to emphasize the word with which Mary defines herself in her surrender to God: she professes "the handmaid of the Lord". The "yes" of Mary to God assumes from the beginning the attitude of service, of attention to the needs of others. The fact of the visit to Elizabeth, which immediately follows the Annunciation, bears witness to this. Availability to God is found in the willingness to take on the needs of others. All this without clamor and ostentation, without seeking places of honor, without advertising, because charity and works of mercy do not need to be exhibited as a trophy. The works of mercy are done in silence, in secret, without boasting of doing them. Even in our communities, we are called to follow Mary's example, practicing the style of discretion and concealment.

The feast of our Mother helps us to make our whole life a "yes" to God, a "yes" made of adoration to Him and daily gestures of love and service.

After the Angelus

Dear brothers and sisters,

yesterday, in Huehuetenango, Guatemala, James Miller was beatified, a religious of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, killed in hatred of the faith in 1982, in the context of the civil war. The martyrdom of this exemplary educator of young people, who paid with his life his service to the people and to the Guatemalan Church, strengthens in that dear nation paths of justice, peace and solidarity. A round of applause for the new Blessed!

Tomorrow there will be a meeting in Paris of the Presidents of Ukraine, Russia and France and the Federal Chancellor of Germany - known as "Normandy Format" - to find solutions to the painful conflict that has been going on for years in eastern Ukraine. I accompany the meeting with prayer, an intense prayer, because peace is needed there, and I invite you to do the same, so that this initiative of political dialogue will contribute to bringing peace in justice to that territory and its population.

I affectionately greet all of you, pilgrims from Italy and from various countries, especially the Polish faithful of Warsaw and Lublin, the Irish policemen and the youth of Sorbara (Modena). A special greeting goes to the Daughters of the Cross, recently recognized as a Public Association by the Cardinal Vicar.

In this feast of the Immaculate Conception, adhesion to Catholic Action is renewed in Italian parishes. I wish all members and groups a good path of formation, service and witness.

I bless the faithful of Rocca di Papa and the torch with which they will light the great star on the fortress of the town, in honor of Maria Immacolata. And my thoughts also go to the Sanctuary of Loreto, where today the Holy Door for the Lauretan Jubilee will be opened: may it be rich in grace for the pilgrims of the Holy House.
This afternoon I will go to Santa Maria Maggiore to pray to the Madonna, and then to the Piazza di Spagna for the traditional act of homage at the foot of the monument to the Immaculate Conception. I ask you to join me spiritually in this gesture, which expresses filial devotion to our heavenly Mother.

I wish you all a happy feast and a good journey of Advent towards Christmas, with the guidance of the Virgin Mary. Please don't forget to pray for me. Good lunch and goodbye!
